Britons are the world’s worst offenders when it comes to carbon emissions from air travel, according to figures published on Wednesday by market research company Global TGI.
Not only are Britain’s average air emissions per adult the highest out of the 20 countries covered at 603 kg per year, they are also a third higher than second-placed Ireland’s 434 kg and more than double the 275 kg from third-placed Americans.
“There are clearly a number of reasons for it, some of which include the British weather and people wanting to get away from that, some of which are to do with our being an island,” said spokesman Geoff Wicken.
“But the rapid growth in low-cost flying has undoubtedly been a factor,” he told Reuters.
The government has pledged to cut the country’s carbon emissions as part of the battle against global warming, but it is also backing rapid expansion of air travel.
It has come under relentless pressure from climate campaigners to curb airport expansion and has called for flights to be included in the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme.
Scientists say carbon emissions from flights are at least twice as harmful to the environment as those at sea level.
However, the road carbon emissions of Britons at 2.4 tonnes per adult are less than one third of Americans’ 7.5 tonnes.
In fact overall American adults have the biggest annual travel carbon footprint in the world at 7.8 tonnes, more than double France’s 3.7 tonnes, which comes in at number two.
Third on the list at 3.1 tonnes is Britain, followed by Ireland on 3.0, Germany on 2.4 and Spain on 2.2 tonnes.
India is at the foot of the table with an annual travel footprint of just 200 kg per adult, with second-to-bottom China on 500 kg. But TGI warned that travel emissions in those two booming economies were rising rapidly.
It also pointed out that its figures were calculated per adult, meaning it did not provide overall travel emission details of each country. That would be achieved by multiplying the figures by the adult population.
TGI, which carries out research on brand usage and consumer behaviour, calculated air emissions by adding up the number of long and short haul flights taken. It arrived at road emissions figures by determining the amount of fuel consumed.
Since this term “carbon footprint ” came about you never seem to hear the end of it.
I recently heard some american politican mention those words, and the American public was rather baffled as to it’s meaning. How the heck can the UK be the worst? i mean since when did the UK have the most busy airports in the world!
Also i bet American’s do not get to hear a word of this on the 6 o’clock news, but we most likely will. Hand over ya wallet’s and purses, i detect more “green taxes” on the way.

And so paves the way for a series of unnecessary airport, plane fuel flight taxes and charges which will now be brainlessly supported by all the greenies and those too thick to realise that the CO2 scaremongering is a ficticious creation designed to facilitate nothing more than more scathing tax collection
We really must be one of the most gullible, naive, apathetic, idiotic, brainless, unthinking populations on the planet
I reckon if gordy said that sex was a major contributor to global warming a massive amount would blindly support a shag tax as a result and without question
Its embarassing
15 October, 2007 at 6:50 am #290713What with the taxes and the PC in this country it is no wonder that we are at fault with the carbon emissions from air travel, Most british today want to get out of this country, alright complaining about it but this is not Great Britain anymore it belongs to everyone else, can you walk anywhere in this country without feeling you are the foreigner.
15 October, 2007 at 8:02 am #290714The case for CO2 making ANY difference to the climate isnt proven, its merely claimed and supported by unscientific theories and the deceitful linking of unrelated things
The case for the sun warming up and cooling however IS proven to be the cause of the planet warming and cooling, as is the irrefuteable proof that the clouds are the main protagonist in the planets weather cycles
So until they can actually manage to prove this even to the point where they have some degree of credible data that supports their claim which at present they dont have the faintest snippet of ANY tax or price hike linked to global warming and CO2 is at most fraud
But with a population the majority of which seem to be mindless unquestioning retarded left wing brainwashed automatons that believe any old crap the government tells them such nonsense gets swallowed more eagerly than a popstars go go goo
