Hi
I’m looking at purchasing a new laptop made by a company called Acer. I don’t know anything about them, and although the specs look very good on a lot of models, someone has warned me to avoid this manufacturer like the plague.
Does anyone have first hand experience of either owning or using Acer products, and are they reliable or cheap and cheerful. Other than that might look at something by Dell.
Any info greatly appreciated as always.
Thanks.

They come with combo cd/dvd and the batteries are ok.
Try and get one with a 1gb of ram and a dual processor.
13 September, 2007 at 4:24 pm #287513When I worked in the computer industry (for a manufacturer) we used to compete against Acer. Basically they are cheap and cheerful. They build their stuff down to a price rather than up to a quality. I never once heard anybody have anything good to say about their after sales service …. you have to just hope and pray that it doesn’t go wrong.
By contrast Dell always gave us a damn good run for our money. They sell direct to the end user; you can ‘customise’ your selected computer if you want – or just buy a standard configuration; they actually meet their delivery promises; their prices are pretty competitive; they have a wide range of products to suit most applications; they only build to order (i.e. you don’t get left with some old clunker that’s been in stock unsold for ages)and their computers are good quality.

Its always been hit and miss with dell.
Never take the back off a dell, you will not like what you see.

I would never buy anything from Del, or his mate Rodney

I used to work for Maxdata Computer GmbH – but no longer. Yes the inside of a Dell is not too inspiring, but not half as scary as the insides of an Acer box.
13 September, 2007 at 10:59 pm #287517ohhh errr. My sons got a cheap and chearful Acer upstairs, uses wireless internet on it.
Had no probs so far but he has only had it since January.
So whats the life span on these? He (with a bit of help from us) only paid £299 for it.
14 September, 2007 at 9:42 am #287518The lifespan depends on so many variables it is hard to say. Cheap components typically last a shorter time and present more problems than the more expensive ones.
If it is just used for general home computing and mucking around a bit on the internet then it ought to run for a couple of years or so without many issues. However, upgrading any of the components in the future will undoubtedly give you problems.
When the time comes, best thing is to set fire to it and claim on the insurance …. and then get a better quality one.

Isnt the idea of setting fire to her son, to get rid of him, why would anyone want to get another 1
14 September, 2007 at 4:18 pm #287520guys thanks for your feedback tho I’m still none the wiser. what I liked about the Acer laptops was the inbuilt webcams that a lot of the higher spec models have and that’s something that I would have liked in a new laptop. I’ve got a budget of £700 max, so want as much as possible for this. Maybe I should stick with the more well know manufacturers, ie HP/Sony/Fujitsu/Toshiba, tho with these you probably get a little less for your cash but a bit more quality.
