If you don’t practice a religion, but identify yourself as a member of that religion does it mean you have been influenced by your family or maybe have a need to believe in something other than yourself…what does it mean and is there a name for this?

    agnostic ?

im a confirmed athiest personally but my grandfather was a staunch catholic and he was determined we would be brought up with no religious interference, he always said catholisism is built on fear and guilt. but i still always say if you pray to god when your in fear of losing a loved one, who cares which god it is if it gives you hope. so i reckon god is in your heart not in a church, mosque, temple etc. you dont have to allie yourself and therefore be pidgeonholed by anyone..

    I’m an Evangelical Agnostic.

I go round knocking on stranger’s doors and say “I don’t know … what do you think???”

Doesnt that sum up pretty much the majority of catholics and christians tho?

It seems at times that people only claim to be part of a religion so they can sneer vehemently with a sense of the moral highground when someone ELSE screws up, but when they or one of their own makes the exact same screw up theyre surprisingly quiet lol

As much as I think Islam is like a cancer within civilised society I do have to admire the dilligence with which they practise their faith. same too for sikh’s. Buddhists and even Hovis whitebreadnesses all of whom dont only hide behind their religion or use it as a tool for chastisement but also practise it fully and do their best to actually live by the same standards they judge others by

I have a lot of respect for consistency and integrity even where its a consistent integral doctrine I dislike, whereas hypocrisy and double standards I dislike whatever denomination it hides under

A point that isnt made as often as it should be, is that agnosticism and atheism ARE religious beliefs and deserve to be respected as much as any other within society rather than only tongueing the rectums of the religious fanatical minorities

Personally tho I grew out of having imaginary friends when I was a child, so I dont have any need to disguise that fascination by affiliating myself with an organised delusion for self justification

I also reckon that if there IS a god of some description, one that does expect the basic common decencies outlined in pretty much every major religion and even in most cults I dont reckon many if any members of the main religions such as judaism, catholocism, islam or christianity would be doing anything less than burning in hell for the b’stardised interpretations of their faith they follow as they have all been twisted by mortal men to control, direct and manipulate their followers into doing the bidding of the driving forces in those faiths for eons even when those actions clearly contradict the gist of the religion itself making its membership null and void in relationship to any actual good there might be

So I’m pretty much on the fence with this topic really lol    8)

Religion is mind control and hope for the weak in time of despair and pain when they need hope for a possible better day, personally i think it’s all b#llsh!t.

I think that alot of religion is held by people because it makes things sound easier..

how many atheists? on this board have ever posted about someone dying and said something like

Rest In Peace youv gone to a better place now with angels and blah blah blah.

religion makes the idea of a family members death easier because you hold onto this belief that they dont just get put into a box and into a fire or into the ground to rot away.
I honestly believe thats why alot of people have a small part of religious belief in them.

Im a Catholic by the way!

It’s the old old story: Nature or nurture?
