The more I think about this, the more I dislike it. When it first came in, it seemed like a good initiative but now I’m not so sure. Rangers, for example, have a much bigger squad than they have had for a long time but some of these players are missing out on even a place on the bench due to this rule.

This deprives them of first team opportunities, which are instead going to players who are unlikely to feature anyway, and makes it all the more difficult for a manager to include them in future squads. As Archie McPherson pointed out at the weekend, out of the six outfield players on the Rangers bench, there’s only three realistic options.

The youngsters aren’t likely to feature at some clubs as managers have to utilize their first team squad as best as they can under the circumstances.

yes its nonsense, celtic recently had to put two players on the bench who werent even fully fit to play to comply with the ruling

i think its a good idea, hopefully in time it will benifit both the nation and the clubs, once a good youth system is applied, ensuring they have good youngers coming through, capable of coming of the bench

I’m not so sure it will pay dividends in time. Certain clubs (the Old Firm for example) are under pressure to perform so what chance do they have? I can’t remember the names of those on the bench for Rangers at the weekend but it was pretty obvious that Smith would rather see Boyd, Broadfoot and Darcheville instead. And do you think any of those youngsters would even be on the bench if Gow, Beasley and Sebo (well, perhaps not Sebo) were available to him?

Vector – that just makes a mockery of an already ridiculous situation!

Some say it will see more youngsters benefitting. Yes if they are English/Scottish or whatever.

We (Arsenal) are being constantly scrutinised for not having enough youngsters in our acadamy from England/homegrown.

A balance has to come from somewhere. We love our clubs and we love watching our national sides play, but are top clubs willing to ignore a shit hot 17 year old striker from Senegal or somewhere in favour of a lad from Leyton Orient?

The greed of the club to win will always come above any international directive, so at least if there is a directive in place at least young players can come through.

But clubs really need to be a bit more clued up about it and not just chase the £ signs all the bloody time. Think of the fans a bit more.

There are already good youngsters coming through. We dont need this rule.
It should be a be a big thing for a player to make the bench as a reward for good form. He should think he’s progessing. Young Players shouldent be on the bench just because some rule says they have to be.
