For those of you who don’t keep up-to-date on water issues, there has been a nasty turn off events.

From the 1st of January 2008 you will no longer be able to fix your own leaking taps, replace your ball cocks or do anything at home that’s on mains water.

The reason? The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) and the water companies have got together and deicide that you can’t work on anything to do with mains water without passing there test first.

The risk of water back flow is far too high for mere “diyer” to deal with.

I think it’s a joke, if the water company would maintain an adequate water pressures there would be no need for this, but yet again the water companies are pasting the buck.

So if you have a dripping tap, fix it now !!!!

A similar thing is already in place for electrics, but as with this one its totally unenforceable and is really just a money making scheme with dubious grounding in fact to back up its reasoning

As with the electrica version it wont stop DIY’ers, and if they were actually wanted to be stopped then restricting the sale of parts ONLY to trade outlets would be the smart starting place, but its never going to happen is it?

So as long as the stuff is on sale the work will continue and infact I for one am soon to be completely replumbing my bathroom and kitchen irrespective of any change of regulation and regularly install showers for customers which I cant see becoming hampered in any way by some nonsensical directive

I think you will be ok has long has you fit a class 5 double cheak valve (£4) on the mains or anything with a hose such has a shower.

Just a quick question DOA. My central heating system needs an overhaul and bringing up to todays standards. How much would you charge to completely flush and refill the system and then add individual thermostats to each of the radiators. There are 6 in total.

Hmmmm………….. How much have you got? LoL

First you can’t have thermostatic radiator valves on all of your radiators, you need to have one has a by-pass valve, this is normally the radiator in the bathroom, it’s always on.

You need this to stop your boiler from over heating, but you could also use a towel rail in the kitchen or fit a towel rail in the bathroom to do the same job.

Its about £200-300 for power flushing but if you have it done with the new valves, it should be cheaper. The thermostatic radiator valves start at about £10.

But all the work should be done in a day and we would charge about £400 for the work.

Personally I think power flushing an old heating system is asking for trouble, if any of the old radiators are rusty in side, they all leak after and you may have to replace them.

Remember the labour cost is 90% of the price.

All ways get 3 quotes and use your local trading standards web site to find a plumber or the “ihpe “web site

Ive been quoted 240 pound for the power flush and 30 pound per radiator for the thermostats so its on a par with what you suggest. The radiator system is quite old so fingers crossed they dont leak lol.

I would like to point out that if they’re anyone over the age of 60 or is disabled, there are grants available for new heating systems or replacements.

Or you could just buy some chunky knit arran cardigans and leave the heating system to decompose quietly lol :D
