Did anyone else see the report today about the number of people who believe that women who wear revealing clothes, are flirtatious etc should take some responsibility should they be raped?
Perhaps even stranger was that on Reporting Scotland, they spoke to a woman who looked about twentyish who agreed with that sentiment. The fact that there are people who believe there are ways of justifying rape is bad enough. But the fact that there are also women who believe it is even harder to comprehend. How on earth does someone arrive at that conclusion?

Big can of worms this one…..

think it was just a poll done in scotland and i was shocked when heard it on the news John also….. i certainly see why most people don;t report rapes. Personally i don;t see what a man or woman child wear to make any difference, RAPE is RAPE end of …
10 August, 2007 at 8:51 am #282390It’s not primarily their fault and I’m all for (good looking) women wearing skimpy clothes But there are times and places where dressing like that is unwise. An sexual attack on a woman (or a man for that matter – it does happen) is not the victim’s fault but sometimes they can contribute to the motive.
It’s like football supporters can wear their teams strip wherever they like but it would be unwise to wear Spurs strip in the Milwall area late on a Saturday night!

10 August, 2007 at 10:04 am #282392Interesting topic this. I saw a young girl this morning who was certainly no more than 18 years old. Now when I say her “skirt” was short, I mean SHORT. It literally came down to just below her bum. I coudn,t beleive it. Yes she was extreemly pretty. Yes she had a lovely figure, would have rivalled Kylie, but, if she had been attacked, would she have been “asking for it” because of the way she was dressed? Are women who wear swimming costumes on the beach or bikinis “asking for it”? No woman is asking for it simply because of the way she is dressed. In an ideal world, women should be allowed to dress just as they please without fear of being attacked. Certainly if a woman wears something as short as that girl I saw was, she is drawing more attention to herself from men, who will obviously look. That does NOT however give them the right to attack her, but, unfortunatly, there are men who will look at women who are dressed in skimpy clothes and will attack them and then blame it on the woman because she was dressed provocitavely.
10 August, 2007 at 10:24 am #282393It would be interesting to know what the victims of rape were actually wearing when they were attacked, as really I think it is speculation. Are all victims of rape attractive? Does a rapist care what they are wearing? Obviously the less they are wearing the easier it is for them, but I think the mindset of a rapist is so warped they see things differently to the rest of us “normal” (!!) people anyway, so they dont really care.

Good point there Sharon because of course we do read about old ladies being raped as well, so obviously the way a woman is dressed and wether she is young and attractive or not, and what she is wearing doesn,t always come into it, because, as you rightly said, the mind of a rapist is so warped it makes no difference to them either way.
10 August, 2007 at 12:36 pm #282395Going back to the subject of women not reporting rape, I have never actually thought about it from the point of view that someone, somewhere may take the attitude of ‘Well, you didn’t do a lot to discourage it, did you? If it happened at all and you’re not just crying wolf cos you’re embarrased by your actions’ That happened here recently, a girl got drunk and had a threesome with two equally drunk lads. In the cold light of day, she was worried what her friends and family would think so she cried rape.
I thought it was primarily to do with the fact that it is very difficult to prove. DNA testing
and the likes can prove whether there was some form of sexual activity but it cannot prove that there was no consent.10 August, 2007 at 1:21 pm #282396@bat wrote:

So why does a woman like this wear a skirt that just covers her butt. Is it not to attract the attention of men??? And although with 99% of men the thought of actual rape would never enter their heads, the thought of shagging her deffinataly would! Wearing clothes like that is a deliberate attempt to attract the opposite sex and she knows fine well that she will have blokes swarming around her as soon as she leaves the house. Now thats all well and good in the majority of cases but as we all know, this world is full of warped and twisted people. She is attracting them as well and she should burden some of the blame “IF” she was to be taken down some back street and sexually attacked.
