Now that we have foot and mouth again, I worry that if it spreads, vaccination won’t be used because some of the people in charge of decision making will be the same as last time round in 2001. If they choose vaccination and it works, it will highlight the fact that they were wrong not to use it last time round, laying themselves open to criticism or possibly legal action.
Added later in day.
Up until today’s outbreak, there had been no recent cases of foot and mouth anywhere in the EU. Yet this outbreak is within 3 miles of the research centre at Pirbright in Surrey where research stocks of foot and mouth virus are held.
6 August, 2007 at 11:59 am #281293One of the two facilities at Pirbright is indeed thought to be the likely origin of the new foot an mouth outbreak.
If this is the case I think it is at least worth the media investigating whether Pirbright might have been the source of the 2001 outbreak too. I know that first appeared in Essex and was traced to a farm in Northumbria and was of a virus strain common in the Far East, but is it still possible there might have been a trail back to Pirbright?
6 August, 2007 at 5:28 pm #281294Why did they transport the culled bodies across country to be incinerated? The infection will be on the truck and spread to other places. I know they have to Disinfect, but that wont get every spore off of a huge truck. Its the worst decision DEFRA could have made, and after the quick thinking farmer acted responsibly and quickly again the government/clowns go and ruin everything!

Incinerate me
6 August, 2007 at 7:29 pm #281297We hear very little mention of deer as a possible means of spreading foot and mouth. All 5 species of deer found in Britain are, apparently, susceptible to the disease and capable of passing it on to livestock.
6 August, 2007 at 8:51 pm #281298They definately can carry it, as they are cloven hooved.
6 August, 2007 at 8:51 pm #281299I`m worried if it spreads , All the carboots will be off , because it spreads on vehicles wheels & on peoples feet , i mean ffs its been bad enough with the damn weather & now this , its just not on , why cant they just burn all the contaminated animals on that farm & have done with it ……. :x :x :x
7 August, 2007 at 2:41 am #281300I’ve been vomiting my guts up for the past 3 days. I’ve given up drinking and I don’t take drugs anymore.. I won’t even touch painkillers. I’ve grown out of all that. So that rules out the reasons for vomiting.
But.. I have had burgers.
So… that’s kinda worrying.

Unless you are cloven hooved and have four legs you have nothing to worry about.
