Since everyone should be apologising to everyone for things that happened in the dim, distant past, who should be apologising to the British?

First we have to decide what we mean by British. I mean here the Ancient Britons – a loose term used to describe the ‘original’ settlers of these islands (Britain and Ireland) before the succession invasions that are recorded in our history.

The first invaders were the Celts, who swept in from Europe a few hundred years before the Romans came. Then the Romans came, forcing the Celts out of England. Then we had Danes, Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Normans invading our land. Should all these groups be apologising to the Ancient Britons?

Such an apology would be very easy as all we need to do is apologise to ourselves since traits of all these invaders are likely to be present in our genetic make-up!

On behalf of the Celtic/Roman/Dane/Angle/Saxon/Norman elements of my ancestry may I apologise most profusely to my Ancient Briton ancestry.

The beastly French should apologise to us for their unprovoked invasion in 1066.

As a direct result of William the Conqueror, our decent and pure Anglo-Saxon bloodlines have become tainted with horrid French / Hugenot blood – to the detriment of all the generations that followed this criminal act.

Bugger the ‘entente cordiale’ and bugger all Frenchmen.

William the Conquerer felt he had a legitimate right to the English throne. Edward the Confessor had named william as his heir in 1051. On Edward the Confessor’s death Harold got himslef crowned quickly. With Pope Alexander IIs blessing (the pope was one of the most powerful people in the western world at the time) William believed he had a right to invade England. Other claims to the throne wee Halold Hardrada, King of Norway who belived that the English throne had been promised to his father. Another was Prine Edgarwho could trace his ancestry from Alfred the Great. william was actually great nephew to Queen Emma, the wife of Edward the Confessor.

By the time of the Norman invasion, England already had many normans living and trading within its borders and many who wanted William to be in control – after all, he’d done a good job in Normandy!

So, blaming the Normans is not so straightforward!

our decent and pure Anglo-Saxon bloodlines

No such thing! I read somewhere that the British population (other than relatively recent immigrant groups) is genetically 30% Celtic / pre-Celtic and this is roughly the same throughout the British Isles, surprisingly. Romans, Saxons, Danes, Normans etc. have had a smaller influence on our genetic make-up although they had major cultural influences.

Since Anglo-Saxons were mongrels (a mixture of Angles and Saxons) they were not ‘pure’ anyway!
