Barclaycard is to close its Manchester call centre and move some of the work to India, with the loss of more than 600 jobs, it has announced.
The firm’s base at Peterloo House will shut in July, with work moved to Mumbai and Delhi and to Teesside.
The restructuring will affect 630 workers, who will be paid until October to help them find other work.
Staff at the city centre’ s Dickinson Street call centre were told about the closure on Tuesday morning.
Antony Jenkins, chief executive of Barclaycard, said: “Decisions like these are never easy and we will be doing everything we can to support those affected.
“Barclaycard’s business is becoming more global and to stay successful we must change how we operate to reflect this.
“Unfortunately, closing our Peterloo House site in Manchester centre is part of that process.”
Mr Pantak said “robust agreements” were in place to help staff find other jobs.
He added: “We believe that with such a large presence in the North West, Barclays should be able to accommodate all those staff who are displaced but wish to remain with them.
“We will be pushing the bank hard to achieve this outcome.”
The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce said the cuts were a huge “blow” to the city.
Dr John Risk, the chamber’s principal economic advisor, said: “Barclaycard is a major employer in the area and that the banking and financial sector is so strong here.
“The workforce will be understandably shocked by the news. It is vital that they are offered help to find other work.”

One can only hope that the message of, “Barclays should be able to accommodate all those staff who are displaced”, is one that is dearly meant, and that some very hard working people do their upmost to find the 630 Mancunians other work.
The reality is, that these 630 people are looking at this coming years festive celebrations with a blank cheque and no Ink to write numbers on it, as britiain has been relegated to the 5th best economy and rising unemployment now stands at 1.7 million.
Doesn’t bother Barclay’s, “Barclaycard’s business is becoming more global and to stay successful we must change how we operate to reflect this.”
If only the standard of living in britain, was more like “Mumbai and Delhi”…
So, do you wana vote for the globalists who put money before YOUR welfare??
Or do you want a government who’ll put the people of britain FIRST??
May 3rd, Local Elections, YOU decide YOUR future.

Interesting post Miss Lush
To play devils advocate though
Are we not living in a “global” economy- with the emphasis on global hence to place Britain first would seem very difficult. We have a very high cost of living compared to other European countries which means the wages need to reflect the level it costs to live in that area.
I heard today the minimum wage will rise to £5.52 ph from october 07. This is putting British people first but makes it difficult to compete in a global market economy. How would we make multi national companies stay in the UK? We can’t legislate them to stay or they wouldnt come in the first place.
I dont have the answer- it’s very sad for the staff at barclay card (although I read they will be paid until October 07 which is but small consolation)
7 March, 2007 at 1:25 pm #263182No, we dont live in a global economy, because were only ruled as part of 4 countries.
We dont pay taxes to those outside britain, so we should always be put first.
We dont need multi-national companies. That has been the easy option of the kind of people you vote for. If we havn’t their jobs, we cant buy their product.
What we need, is a government who put us first, by encouraging us to make and produce products for ourselves. But you voted for globalisation of britain.
They will be paid until its time to buy their children christmas presents. Some indigenous English are becoming more like tiny Tim’s, created by the old gang scrooge.

After changin net providers Ive become quite accustomed to talking to providers in India. They have been polite (to the extreme, which isnt always helpful when you have wires coming out your ears!), and never ever rude. I just wish they would talk a little slower, so I could hear all the words and not just bits and pieces.
8 March, 2007 at 12:23 pm #263184They could just move it to Leeds, thats beginning to look like an annexe of india anyway nowadays :D
