Theres a government report about to be released that will “highlight” how certain subsets of society are “discriminated” against in the work place
This has always been a whimsical topic for me having been an employee, supervisor, HR consultant, Manager and business owner and employer in various guises over the years
The group they are set to claim is treated the most INequal is single mums with small kids
A few things that spring to mind from an employers position are this
1. They ARENT equal employees, many of them have no support network and HAVE to be constantly available for their kids in an emergency. That equates to man hours lost but paid for if they are on a salary
2, They are rarely able to work late, away, weekends or unsociable hours if required which even if not part of the job itself will often be wanted in crisis situations from time to time
3. Their kids WONT in most cases ever contribute to the company their parents work for, so the arguement of children being important hold no water to THAT employer at THAT time in any financial sense whatsoever, so its bad business to finance their upbringing over and above the financial benefit the parent presents
For an employee to be EQUALLY worth employing they HAVE to offer an EQUAL benefit to the company IF employed
For an employee who is employed to warrant and EQUAL pay packet they should provide an EQUAL return FOR that pay packet
Thats ACTUAL equality, you get paid an equal amount based on worth, if you are worth less to an employer you deserve to be paid proportionally less otherwise its INEQUAL to the ones who DO provide greater work, attendance, flexibility and return fot their pay packet
This isnt about equality, its about INequality, its about getting people to hire less than the best person for the job and to pay people who present less value the same money as those who provide higher value
What has ANY of that got to do with equality in an employment sense of the word?
Substandard employees like the disabled, single parents, women generally who are young enough to still breed etc etc shouldnt be paid the same by an employer, but maybe the government should pay the companies a tempter to employ such substandard people and then top up those persons wages themselves?
Because its in the governments interest they are employed and is of no benefit to the employer to employ substandard staff whatsoever, that just isnt good business sense
