” Hilali said during a Ramadan service: “If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it … whose fault is it, the cats’ or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem.”

Yes, I understand there are varying reasons for veiling and yes, he does have the right to free speech but WHY don’t these men realise how they are demeaning themselves.

The foremost reason for “covering up” is protection from the sexual attention of men. Have they no self control, no respect for themselves…do they actually see themselves as animals… why can’t they take responsiblity for their sexual urges?

Most mosques have partitions seperating the sexes – so the men will not be distracted while they are praying – are they really that weak?

When I read a statement like Sheikh Hilali’s I find it very derogatory to the men themselves.

“Oh Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters, and wives and daughters of the believers, to extend their outer garments around themselves, so that they would be distinguished and not molested. And God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful”.
    (Qur’an, 33:59)

I can only echo this. I read in the papers last week that the whole point of Islamic women covering themselves from head to toe was to remove the temptation for men to rape them !!!! I admit to being somewhat gobsmacked by this.

Yes, the mosques that actually allow women to attend!

    Good point Sharon!

Although, in recent years, due to many brave muslims that are speaking out and protesting this injustice – arguing that it has no basis in Islam – it will hopefully pave the way for women to have a real voice in the muslim communities.

It is not in Islam that women have to cover themselves from head to toe etc.. it’s all nonsense. It’s just a mis-interpretation of a fraction of muslims.

    Cas

Muslim women,,,,,,,,,,the same as any other woman, should be allowed to dress as they please,,,,,I don’t have a problem with they way anyone dresses,,,,,,it’s a free society

    However,,,,,,,,,,,,

What I do have a problem with, is this woman,,,,,,,taking her case to the court of human right with regard to her now, (having lost her job),,,,,,,,,,because once appointed, she chooses to move the goalposts, so to speak, and demand that she be allowed to wear a veil while a man is present,,,,,,,,a man was present at her interview, didn’t wear a veil over her face then did she,,,,,,,,,,double standards???

I watched BBC news one morning this week,,,,,,,a reporter was in a muslim school, Tehran I think it was, the female pupils were wearing headscarves but not veils, another reporter in a school in this country, was asking pupils here, how they felt about those pupils, having to wear veils. They weren’t wearing veils, they were however, wearing headscarves,,,,,,,,,i’d thought about asking the BBC if this was a deliberate change of use of language,,,,,judging by the amount of times the female reporter used the term ”veil” it certainly seemed so,,,,,,,,,,anyone else see it???

Very elusive Dezert………..please be more specific:

I have quoted the Qur’an, but I do realise it is open to interpretation and one has to update these things and not take one human being literally.

We do our best to understand, but a dialogue would help us more…we are not ignorant peasants that do what we are told, we have original thoughts and would like an overview, enabling us to understand your way thinking.

    Look forward to your reply.

As I understand it, the veil idea comes from the fact that Mohammed’s wife insisted on speaking from behind a curtain in her tent whan some men came to visit.

Also the headscarf tradition was possibly originally a Christian one, from Syria. One only needs to look at all the Christian imagary including the Virgin Mary to see what I mean.

Personally, I think all churches should be turned into community halls, nightclubs etc., synagogues into reading rooms and mosques into restaurants! (LOL)

Your’e naughty lol…..and regardless of where it originated I would like to understand why these men feel the need for such separation and their fear of temptation!
