A MUSLIM teacher has been axed after she insisted on wearing a veil to teach young children.
Aishah Azmi, 24, was asked to take it off in class after pupils said they found English lessons hard to understand because they could not see her lips move.
The junior school in Dewsbury, West Yorks, said she could wear her veil in corridors and the staff room – but must remove it when teaching. Angry Miss Azmi refused, claiming the veil was part of her cultural identity, and was suspended.
A council source said yesterday: “It is ridiculous. How can you teach English to young children with a veil over your face?
“The children themselves were complaining. It is about what’s best for the children.”
And the Muslim Council of Britain said Miss Azmi was wrong to insist on covering her face.
Spokesman Dr Reefat Drabu said that in the presence of young children Muslim women were not even required to wear a headscarf, let alone a veil.
Miss Azmi has now taken education bosses at Kirklees Council to an employment tribunal. It will rule on her case in a fortnight.
Many of the 529 boys and girls aged seven to 11 at Headfield Church of England Junior are from ethnic backgrounds where English is not the first language.
The school says that because of this it is essential the children are provided with easily-understandable English lessons.
Council education spokesman Jim Dodds said: “This is nothing to do with religion. We accepted the veil could be worn anywhere else in school but not in the classroom.”
It now seens that a muslim woman with a veil wont ever teach children again. Is it discrimination? Some people talk funny, will all those people be discriminated against because some children wont understand them? What happens if some children decide they dont like how a teacher teaches, will they be suspended?
What constitutes sufficent teacher ability to put accross the subject?
It’s true that muslim women don’t have to wear veils in the presence of young children. So there was no sense in her refusing to remove it.
What about the WHITE CHRISTIAN woman who works for British Airways who was told to remove her cross on her chain, she refused as its her faith and she was suspended from work for 2 weeks without pay??????????????? Speak sense!

another muslim jumping on the bandwagon. we live in your country……teach in your schools.but still think we are entitled to play by our own rules. :roll: wonder what would happen if went into my local mosque and refused to remove my shoes and wash my feet.cos its against my faith and then kicked a stink up cos i was being discriminated against. :-k

And for the knownowts, the Airways dress code allows the wearing of jewelry (yes that includes crosses) as long as they don’t show.1, The teacher was breaking no rules. albeit misguided.
2 The stewardess was breaking the rules. deliberately.

We’ve all been made aware this week by many people, that NOWHERE in the Koran does it say that women have to cover their faces, it’s personal choice made by them. So maybe Ms Azmi, would like to point out where and how her religion clearly forbids it.
As for the cross and chain incident, maybe she did it deliberately, maybe not. If though, this woman has worked for BA for 7 years, why has it suddenly become an issue, or has she only just begun to wear the cross, cos I can’t find anywhere thats made it clear.
I can’t remember where I read or saw it, but it was this week. Fiona Bruce, a newsreader on BBC was asked by her bosses not to wear her crucifix as it may cause offence to some. Who are these some? well we don’t really need to ask do we. I think Pats is right, just one more jumping on the bandwagon on the back of what Jack Straw said just a few days ago. Christ you’d think he’d asked them to disrobe completely the way some of them are carrying on!!! and ASK! being the operative word here, no demands were made, just a simple request. I think Ms Azmi, and the rest of them up in arms, need to get a life!!!
