People, especially on these boards, often argue that Britain’s criminal justice system isn’t working and is doing the nation a disservice. This article about a new book, A Land Fit for Criminals, seems to be a well reasoned defence of this position. It’s not necessarily specifically critical about the present government, more an institutionalised attitude we’ve had for decades.
Do you agree with the article? Does Britain’s justice system need a complete redesigning or is the status quo*, while not perfect, about as good as we can muster and not a bad old pickle?
* No jokes required about them needing a few new chords, thank you.
19 August, 2006 at 11:10 pm #236481Governments and police forces will not deter crime. Only a drastic change in public attitude towards criminality, and a greater sense of society can do that.
However, I agree that the way we deal with criminals has more regard for ‘balancing the books’ than for the victims of crime.

Just read this post Pikester – the book certainly seems interesting in it’s summary – I shal see if the local bookshops have it in stock
30 August, 2006 at 5:24 pm #236483I agree that for some prisons are a soft touch. I worked in the prison service as a typist/secretary & read some of the reports. For many, the thought there but for the grace of god goes I came into my mind.
I think that for the likes of Hindley, Rose West, Brady, yorkshire ripper, serial rapists etc there should be one prison where only these sort of people are held. It can’t be right that a woman who is inside for not being able to pay her TV licence should be in the same prison as these murderers. I also think that there should be more education/skills training and good healthcare and drugs work in the prisons. Not enough is done to stop the drugs getting in.
The thought of someone with say, a 2 year sentence only spends about 3 months in a category A prison and then will move through the system to an open prison (depending on good behaviour). Someone on a 6 month sentence (or imprisoned for not paying council tax etc) will spend the entire time in maximum security prisons. Where is the fairness in that? Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!
Anyone who watches Bad Girls will know Tina’s story – a girl who has been so institutionalised that she does not want to leave prison & doesn’t have anyone on the outside. That is very common. Possibly this has to be looked at.
In short, we would not have an overcrowding problem in prisons if the punnishment fitted the crime – lifers who had killed for ‘fun’ in their own jail – who cares if it’s tough, away from families etc but for ‘debtor’ crimes, a softer system with more use of community punishments. Druggies etc should also be in units where there is no chance to get drugs but get help and support to get off the drugs. I don’t care if these people have to travel to the other end of the country to get the support they need.
The low-life scum who cause most of the everyday crime should be in some form of army barracks and made to undergo basic training for the entire length of their sentence – it works for Bad Lads Army, give it a try on a larger scale!
30 August, 2006 at 6:33 pm #236484well the police put burglerys highin on their agenda’s than proctecting children…
the forgein prisoners should be deported…. every other country sends back our nasty scum whom have comminted crimes after they have served time….
bring back Hanging im all for…. let the people of britain speak… im sure it would surprise you that most would favour capital punishment back….
Life should mean life with no parole…. life in jail shouldnt be a waltz in the park…. forget their HUMAN RIGHTS…. when you committed the crime you’ve not considered those persons HUMAN RIGHTS…. you should be banged up with no luxerys… i mean prisons have games rooms, libreys, pool tables, computers…. why the f cuk should a criminal have the need to use these….. why should they have libertys and human rights…. pi ss in a pot and empty it urselves…. basic food…. water only…. and a 6 x 6 bare cell and allowed out for 1 hr walking… shakled as well…!!! and banged up for 23 hrs of the day…
but wait…. all the so called do-gooders whom think these people deserve HUMAN RIGHTS… does it not say in the bible AN EYE FOR AN EYE….
