Muslim leaders summoned to talks with the Government on tackling extremism in their midst called for public holidays to mark their religious festivals.
….some senior Muslim figures turned the tables yesterday and made a series of demands which also included the introduction of Sharia law for family matters.
Dr Syed Aziz Pasha, secretary general of the Union of Muslim Organisations of the UK and Ireland, said: ‘We told her if you give us religious rights, we will be in a better position to convince young people that they are being treated equally along with other citizens.’
Some of the 30 moderate Muslim leaders at the meeting told Miss Kelly that important days in their two main religious festivals – Ramadan and Eid-ul-Adha – should be made public holidays for followers of the faith.
Sharia law, which is practised in large parts of the Middle East, should also be introduced in Britain, they argued. While it specifies stonings and amputations as routine punishments for crimes, Dr Pasha said he wanted it only for family affairs.
A recent poll suggested that a third of British Muslims would rather live under Sharia law, while a similar number said they also hope Britain will one day become an Islamic state. But Dr Pasha claimed the legal changes he proposed would help convince young Muslims to integrate better into British society.
There are currently eight permanent bank and public holidays in Britain. Three fall on religious days – Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. The latter two are common law holidays – not specified by law as bank holidays as they were traditionally days of rest and to go to Church.
The other bank holidays were made law in 1871, to give their workers time off – causing other businesses dependent on the banks to follow suit.
By all means, we shouldn’t have a religious bank holiday, not even for christmas. Having said that, few celebrate xmas for christian reasons, but if it means we have to have all religious bank holiday’s (human rights law apparently), then we’d never work again.
The first thing to do, is to !!!STOP RIGHT NOW!!!, religious people who get themselves a non elected “organisation on behalf of whoever” visiting No.10 to discuss religious this that and the other.
That is utter madness, and blair’s religious fanatical wishes will bring this country to its knees one day i can assure you of that.
We are living in difficult times my friendlies. I fear the future when this kind of thing goes on, so sad.
Maybe this is what you want? Are you just waiting for someone to wave a magic wond, i dont get it, what are you waiting for? Why dont you guys wake up and tell your MP your not happy with this kind of pandering and religious fanatisism?
“third of British Muslims would rather live under Sharia law, while a similar number said they also hope Britain will one day become an Islamic state”. TRUST ME, you will NOT want sharia law.
16 August, 2006 at 9:03 pm #236079Specific laws should be passed throughout Europe limiting what ANY religion or cult may preach or practice.
Central to this would be the idea that the greatest punishment any religion could impose would be expulsion from that religion.
A restriction of freedom? Yes, but a restriction on the right to deny freedom too.
17 August, 2006 at 7:20 am #236080More specifically…. England is for the English………
The ‘Little Englander’ mentality seems to be enjoying a resurgence, possibly because we won the World Cup in 1966, possibly because of the over representation of Scots in British politics.
However, our country is Britain and the St George’s cross belongs with the St. Andrews and obsolete St.Partrick’s ones on the Union Jack!

ok gonna attempt to add to this post so bear with me xx
prejudices and racial tension is absolutely running amok…… yes i guess im a softie and believe people r people however, having said that i think that the polically correct members of our society have fuelled this themselves and much of the racialist problems we have is down to some over paid do gooder (s) who need to ‘tick’ boxes and justify their existence.
we are far to sensative to polically correct madness…..ie the case in luton a couple of years ago where shops were not allowed traditional christmas displays , or the other story where the school for instance was not allowed ot have a christmas tree for fear of offending not just muslims but other non pracising christians……
how many time have you seen the advertisment on the telly fer foreign holidays that say u break the countries law u r travelling to you must suffer the consequences….they say be aware of their laws and cultures……..
so why the feck are we behaving like this , why are we afraid to carry on our time treasured traditions………..i maintain that racial prejudices come to a certain extent from lack of knowledge about the cultures for example in africa they hold ‘drop ins’ in the street a guy will sit under a tree and they will gather to do much the same as we do, chat , put the world to rights, moan about the missus n kids, wotever lol……. but because thats the way they work over there when they come to our country and gather in a public place our first reaction at seeing a ‘gatherering’ of black men (usually) is fear……how many times have u crossed the street rather than walk past a group of this nature??? now im not for a minute advocating that all gatherings are innocent but i truly beleive the majority of them are merely ‘hangin out’ or ‘chillin’ wot ever the phrase is lol……
you know what? its the perception people have of ANYONE who is different from your average ‘white’ person……… there is not a chance in hell we will ever ever live in harmony with each other………but what i am saying is dont be afraid to uphold british tradition so d the politically correct brigade, live your life and treat people as u want to be treated……… i really don tknow the answer to all this racial unrest but i do know one thing ,the energy people put into hating and the perception of these ‘different to us’ people could be better served in trying to understand their culture and respect it as much as they should recognise and understand our culture ……… hope that all makes sense lol xxx
and those of you sittin in ur ivory towers with huge obscene salaries , stop tryin to justify ur existence with wot is only generalistic ideals and do something really worthwhile to remedy the problem instead of feckin addin to it …………

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
You cant have religion making ANY laws, that would mean we’d have santan laws, and hell knows what MASS diverse laws from stamp collecting religionists to bingo calling religionists. Sounds completely daft, but people would make up their own religions just to impose their own laws. In small, society would crumble.
However, our country is Britain and the St George’s cross belongs with the St. Andrews and obsolete St.Partrick’s ones on the Union Jack!
Dont be intolerantly fascist. YOU might be british, but dont insist on anyone else having to be so, im English.

Yet you wont find many muslims complaining about christmas.
The people who are to blame, the “politically correct”, are middle class white liberals. All they want, is for us all to become one. They dont believe that humans are different, they believe were all the same. These white liberals are those who work for the BBC, and in most other media outlets, obviously the lib dems, atleast half of new labour, the green party, and now slowly the conservatives are panacking and pandering to marxist liberalism.
What they do, is sell a different type of marxism, that the voters think is what they want. Once there in power, they can work at marxism in schools, bringing up our children with a different attitude to what we had. They create black police, teacher and nurse association. They will happily tear down old historic buildings, give and encourage asylum seekers free trips to rural countryside parks, to make it more “cultured”. You see to them, its not right for a historic park to show its glorious English past, to them marxist fascists, they’ve gota change it to suit everyone’s culture.
Its all presented “nicey nice” on our tv screens, and the great English public are sold a product that doesn’t work.
ITS TIME TO WAKE UP!!

You read me wrong! The last thing I want is religions making laws, what I meant was GOVERNMENTS making laws that restrict what religions may practice or preach!
19 August, 2006 at 8:42 pm #236087middle class white liberals
I’m from a middle class, white background and I don’t think traditional middle-class people want everyone to be the same – they just want the lower classes and foreigners to fit in with their system and not cause trouble!
