26 March, 2005 at 4:46 pm #106439Hi Ellen, so that we can assist you can you post the answers to the following:
1. What is your computer’s Operating System? (e.g. Windows 98SE; ME; 2000; NT; XP Home; XP Pro etc).2. What is the processor speed? (e.g Pentium 4, 1.5 GHz; AMD Athlon 2.0 GHz etc etc).
3.How much RAM do you have installed at the moment? (e.g 64MB; 128MB; 256MB etc etc)
4. How many ‘running processes’ are there currently on your computer at startup? (i.e how many programmes are loaded up and ready to go when you start up?).
5. Is you computer a PC or a laptop?
There are several ways to assist you with your issue, but answers to the above questions will help to point us in the right direction for YOUR computer.

This sounds like your allowing way too many programs to run at start up and your comp has’nt got the sufficent RAM to deal with these all these start up requests, so your comps sending alot of these start up requests to the paging file (Virtual Memory) which ultimatley is becoming full and hence the error. A sure sign of this is your comp taking along time to boot.
By the sound of it you must be running 256 mb of RAM, If your running 512 mb of RAM or higher, You got a massive amount of apps running at start up and this would indicate spyware, malware, viruses or trojans.
You desperatley need to edit your start up registry keys and remove anything that’s not needed at start up to prevent this from happening.
The reason that your comps telling you it’s increasing the volume of the paging file is because if it did’nt increase its size your comp would crash.Do this click start>control panel>system. Under the system properties page please post me your Operating system details, and most importantly how much RAM you have.
Also can you post the the runtime error code that your getting.

29 March, 2005 at 10:16 am #106442i dunno what ram i have 64 rings a bell!!!!!
to me its just a pc that i turn on load up etc etc. not technical me!!!!!:? :? :? :? :?
is that why i get a lot of inresponsive window explorers too?
29 March, 2005 at 11:07 am #106443Ellen, the immediate this to tell you is that if you are using Windows XP Home and have only 64 MB of RAM you simply do not have enough RAM for your computer to operate properly. Are you certain that you have only 64MB???
On your desktop RIGHT click ‘My Computer’ and on the pop up menu LEFT click ‘Properties’. You will then see the processor type and speed as well as the RAM.
Please post them back here.
29 March, 2005 at 11:16 am #106444sorry to but in but having same with the memory to low msg n windows is increasing size.
Will i also be able to act on the imfo you give ellen?
Properties say….2.55GHz n ..192MB of ram29 March, 2005 at 11:28 am #106445Hi Telstar – sure no problem please join in as well.
In your case you probably have 256 MB of RAM actually installed on your PC (even though it is showing less) as the memory sticks come in multiples of 64 (e.g. 64MB; 128MB; 256MB; 512MB). Your processor speed seem to be OK though.
Where I am going with this is to reccomend that 1) you insert another RAM stick into your PC to increase its memory or 2) to use a memory recovery utility to optimise the RAM usage.
I know that the usual fix is to prevent processes starting up with Windows (using ‘msconfig’) but I have always found that this is only a short term work around. Sooner or later you need to increase the physical RAM to cope with all the stuff that you are asking your PC to do.
29 March, 2005 at 11:42 am #106446Thankyou.
I will get another RAM stick n keep you informed, as i have no knowledge of memory recovery.29 March, 2005 at 4:00 pm #106447Ok Telstar – upgrading your RAM is probably the best option. It depends on your motherboard configuration as to how much you can insert. Most modern MB’s will have at least two slots for RAM some may have three or even four. If you have currently got 256MB of RAM installed – chances are that you have 2 X 128MB sticks. Ideally you can never have too much RAM so if you can add a further 256MB to give you 512MB in total then that is a good thing. (My little beast has 1GB of RAM and sometimes I fret a bit if the available RAM drops to around 300MB or so).
Please read your MotherBoard manual carefully (or visit their website ) as some MB’s will only function properly if the RAM sticks are matched (i.e. 2 x 256 or 4 x 128) and if you have unmatched combinations (i.e. 2X 128MB plus 1 x 256 MB) you can damage the MB quite effectively.
If you want any advice as to actually performing the upgrade then please let us know OK?
