(Note from PB – 22/01/2005 – This topic is intended to provide a useful resource for site users to find and to try out for themselves utilities / applications that other users have found helpful. The name of the item should be posted at the top of each post in bold blue type (for ease of reference) and a brief description of what it does etc and if it is Freeware, Shareware and so on. Then post the URL where other users can go to download it.
It is good practice to download any such file from the website where you find it and save it to your hard drive first and then instal it onto your computer from there. That way if you have any doubts about it you can always run a virus scan first before opening the file – and you always have a back up copy saved in case of need.
(If you don’t have a download location to store things – right click on your desktop, select ‘New’ then select ‘Folder’ from the pop out menu and rename it ”Downloads”)
Please remember that you use these utilities / applications entirely at your own risk and JustChat.co.uk makes no recommendation and will not be held responsible if anything goes wrong. You should never delete anything from your computer unless you are quite certain what it is and what it does. In certain cases the functionality of your computer can be seriously impaired if you delete necessary files.
Ad-Aware 1.05 SE Personal:

EasyCleaner is a small program which searches Windows’ registry for
entries that are pointing nowhere. EasyCleaner also lets you delete all
kinds of unnecessary files like temps, backups etc. You can search for
duplicate files and you can view some interesting info about your disk
space usage! You are also able to manage startup programs, invalid
shortcuts and add/remove software list.I wouldn’t recommend deleting duplicate files unless you know what
you’re doing!

So the best thing for the registry files is to keep them in the `undo` facility folder? :?
I delete everything EasyCleaner finds in the registry scan. They’re dead
links.20 December, 2004 at 11:32 am #30835PC Pitstop
This is the place to take your pc for a full MOT.
Not really a software download, though you do have to allow the site to
install a ActiveX control on your pc to run the tests.
You can test anonymously, and get a full report on your pc performance.
By clicking on red or yellow flags, you’ll get clear and concise advice on
how to remedy any problems your pc may have.

Test your firewall with the Internet’s quickest, most popular, reliable and
trusted, free Internet security checkup and information service. And now
in its Port Authority Edition, it’s also the most powerful and complete.
Check your system here, and begin learning about using the Internet
safely.The Three Musketeers
The DCOMbobulator
DCOMbobulator allows any Windows user to easily verify the
effectiveness of Microsoft’s recent critical DCOM patch. Confirmed reports
have demonstrated that the patch is not always effective in eliminating
DCOM’s remote exploit vulnerability. But more importantly, since DCOM
is a virtually unused and unneeded facility, the DCOMbobulator allows any
Windows user to easily disable DCOM for significantly greater security.Shoot The Messenger
Even before the latest DCOM/RPC vulnerability (see above), many
Windows users were being annoyed by “pop-up spam” notices appearing
on their desktops. This intrusion is also facilitated by an exploitation of
port 135. Our free “Shoot The Messenger” utility furthers the security of
Windows by quickly and easily shutting down the “Windows Messenger”
server that should never have been running by default in the first place.UnPlug n’ Pray
As originally urged by the FBI, and still urged by prominent security
experts, our UnPnP utility easily disables the dangerous, and almost
always unnecessary, Universal Plug and Play service. If you don’t need it,
turn it off. (For ALL versions of Windows.)There’s lots of other free stuff here.

29 December, 2004 at 12:34 am #30838Prevx Home
Despite the millions being spent on Anti-Virus software and other cyber
security measures, home computer users remain vulnerable to each
new “Zero Day” cyber-attack during the critical period between the launch
of a new attack and a “signature update” becoming available. With
today’s attacks propagating ever more quickly, the risk of being hit in the
hours immediately following their launch is growing. Prevx Home protects
systems during that window of exposure.Existing technologies also provide poor protection against hack attacks,
Internet worms and the rising tide of malicious spyware. Current spyware
tools detect and clean up after an attack but fail to stop the initial
infection. Prevx Home actually prevents the deployment of malicious
spyware and other malware on the user’s system.29 December, 2004 at 3:17 am #3083912Ghosts Popup-Killer
The only popup-blocker tested with 5 out of 5 points (The Sydney Morning
Herald, 9/20/03) “The verdict: 12Ghosts Popup-Killer nudges ahead on
look, feel and ease of use … It worked smoothly and was easy to install
and use.”12Ghosts Popup-Killer now blocks all popups of Internet Explorer. The
best is, you don’t need to maintain any black list. You may still allow popups by holding CTRL. When a pop-up was blocked
you will hear a sound (optional) so you know that you may have missed
something. To see what you have missed just hold CTRL and refresh the
page.Note that the contents of blocked popups is not download from the
Internet at all, thus saving you bandwith. You do not need to maintain a
black list because 12-Popup simply blocks all pop-ups of Internet Explorer.30 December, 2004 at 1:10 am #30840Xenon 2000: Project PCF
It is a download, but is it useful?
