THE bloody cheek. The bloody Poms have banned Australians saying “bloody” on their commercial television.

When Lara Bingle says “bloody” in a campaign for our tourist attractions, the British Advertising Clearance Centre won’t have a bloody bar of it.

The BACC, the television vetting authority, has banned the “Where the bloody hell are you?” advertising campaign.

But it still can be seen and heard on the internet, in printed form, and on television and radio current affairs shows.

The BBC has played it at least four times in chat shows, and an estimated 100,000 Brits have seen it on an Australian Tourism website – all before its official launch.

“How anyone can take offence at a beautiful girl in a bikini on a sunny beach inviting them to visit Down Under is a mystery to me,” said Tourism Minister Fran Bailey yesterday.

However, Australian tourism authorities had calculated the BACC would object to “bloody” and had a contingency plan.

Managing director of Tourism Australia Scott Morrison will launch the campaign in the UK next week, with a modified television ad asking, “Where the hell are you?”

Mr Morrison isn’t upset by the ban, because it is going to rouse even more interest in the campaign.

“More than 180 destinations advertised on UK television last year to attract tourists and only one of them, Australia, is now getting this type of reaction,” he said.

“The campaign is creating a talkability marketers can only dream about.”

Brits will be directed to the “un-cut” advertisement on a website, and Australians can send virtual post cards to British friends.

The optimism is based on $6 million of research which found the target audience would not be offended by the word “bloody”.

Australian High Commissioner in London Richard Alston will lead an appeal to the BACC, asking it to change its decision.
