I’ve never transferred files from one pc to another, but it’s easily done if the
pc you wish to copy to is running Windows XP.
I think you need to speak to Auntie Morty. :wink:29 January, 2006 at 12:09 am #185552There are two ways (at least) to do this.
The easy way is to insert a portable USB memory stick into the old computer (into a USB slot) and open the relevant drive number (E: or F: etc) and copy the files onto it. Then remove it and insert it into the USB slot of the new computer and open the drive and drag the files to their new destination.
The other method is to link the two computers up with an ethernet / network cable and then transfer the files from one to the other on the newly created network. This is slightly more demanding but if you want to go this route then I can talk you through it if you want.
Hope that this helps.

So Plan ‘A’ is out. :lol:29 January, 2006 at 12:28 am #185554er…… yes I missed that bit – silly me.
OK it does beg the question, if the screen isn’t functioning, how can you tell if the old computer is successfully booting all the way into Windows???
As it’s a laptop it is going to be pretty difficult to get a video feed out of it onto a temporary screen or even to instal a temporary video card. Without being able to see what is going on I don’t see how you can successfully transfer data either by the USB drive method or by the network method. You have to be able to ”see” what you are doing on the donor computer.
If the old one was a PC you could remove the hard disc (C: drive) and instal it as a slave in another PC and copy the data across. Problem is that Notebooks / Laptops are notoriously difficult to tinker about inside as they are so bloody compact.
I wonder if you could copy from it with a crossover network cable? I think that the donor computer remains passive and the receiver computer does all the work so it might be possible.
29 January, 2006 at 12:51 am #185555Windows XP has a File Transfer Wizard. You only need to link the computers
with the special cable. That much I do know.
My guess is that all the work is done on the recipient computer screen. So if
the old laptop is booting and only the screen is screwed, no probs.
Auntie Morty knows. :wink:29 January, 2006 at 4:27 pm #185556Thanks owen and PB think the cable thingy you both have talked about is me best option i have tryed to put his old lap top on mine to see if it will open up but think i didnt do it right   i wont give up love a good tinker with things

Basically you just need a cable to link the two PC’s together. There are different types of leads, depending on how fast you want to transfer or what ports you have available on your PC’s. I think I used USB to USB Laplink cable when I transfered my files [thanks to a colleague for lending it to me !] – you only have to use the new PC then, two windows come up, one showing your files on the old PC and one for the new – you just select the files you want to transfer over and it does the rest.
Anyway, whichever lead you choose you can then use the new PC to transfer files from the old one. You should get a window showing your files on the old PC and you can then click on the files you want to transfer them to the new one.
As long as you switch you old PC on, the lead should be able to read what is on there.
Windows XP has a Files Transfer Wizard but it asks you to download the wizard onto the old PC.

Go to PC World Sunny and ask em for a file transfer cable.

 hehe – make sure your hubby asks them in PC World which one to get – you want one where you don’t need to install anything on your old Laptop [Windos XP File Transfer Wizard will ask you to install the Wizard and run it on the old Laptop]. The Laplink cable was really easy to use – just plug in, boot up both PC’s/Laptops and on your working PC it shows an explorer window showing you what is on your old Laptop so you can just select what you want. Only took me about 30 mins to transfer everything over [music/pictures, etc]. Well worth the money.
You can hassle me anytime my little ray of sexy sunniness
