21 January, 2006 at 6:16 pm #184579I’ve spoken with Bat at some considerable length and to be honest I’m a bit baffled with her issue.
Her Operating System is Windows XP Home (SP2)
Her firewall settings aren’t the issue – if it is disabled her issue remains unaffected. Re-enabling it makes no difference. (She is using Windows firewall and the IP’s that she is trying to access are not listed in the blocked IP address file).
She doesn’t have any virusees or spyware or adware or malware that I can find – and I’ve used several different cleaning apps and thoroughly scanned her PC. Nothing detrimental was found – or at least nothing that could or would cause her issue.
I have gone through her browser settings (Microsoft IE 6.0) – where I thought the problem was – but they all seem to be OK to me. They mimic mine – which works OK.
She can access the internet; she can hit on say Google and can search for any page and access it all in the normal way. Apart from below, hewr browser and her internet connection all seem to operate exactly as they should.
The problem comes when she tries to access any page from ”Sun Microsystems” or one that she has previously accessed to download Java.
Any of these pages refuse to load – whether accessing them from Favourites, from Google; or by typing in the URL into the address bar. In all cases the page won’t download or display, although following her on my PC the page loads normally, so there is nothing wrong with the site or the URL.
She needs to access these pages in order to download an uncorrupted version of Java (in order to access the JustChat chatrooms).
I am guessing – but I think that somehow these pages have got themselves into her ”Hosts” file and her PC is looping back through itself instead of going to the URL’s IP address and getting the page. In other words the IP address for the URL has been entered into her Hosts file as ‘127.0.0.1 localhosts’ and her PC cannot resolve it to the correct IP address and thus access the page.
Problem is that I don’t know the detail off exactly how to access her Hosts file and if necessary edit it.
Anybody know how to do this?????

this any good PB?
This file can be cleaned, but it must be done very carefully. If you are on a computer network, ask your network administrator for help, as removing the wrong entry can deny you access to some resources
To find your Hosts file, named “HOSTS”:
Windows XP:
* Access folder C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSETC in Explorer.
Windows 2000:
* Access folder C:WINNTSYSTEM32DRIVERSETC in Explorer.
Windows 95/98:
* Access folder C:WINDOWS in Explorer.
Open file “HOSTS” in Notepad. Before making changes, do a “Save As” and save a backup of this file as “HOSTS.BAK”. Then reopen the HOSTS file.
Now, delete all entries in this file except for the following and any other entries you are sure have legitimate uses:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Resave the file.
Has she tried system restore?

She was having problems a few days ago and I advised System Restore.
She reported back that all was hunky dory in pc land.
Now this! :?
Your advice about the Host Fle sounds good though. I did read this whilst
Googling Bats’ problem.22 January, 2006 at 10:01 am #184582She has used System Restore and in desperation, has gone right back to last year – but the problem persists. I am completely stumped on this one. Hosts file ONLY seems to have the ”localhost” IP in it. I feel sure that her PC or Internet Explorer or something is blocking certain IP addresses but I’m buggered if I can see where.
She is now going to totally wipe her HDD and clean re-install her Operating System.
Fingers crossed people.

I,ve done that today Tiggy, a complete clean install of XP. I,ve spent a horrible 15 mins in another chat site, eeeeewwwwwww so I know I,ve got java installed, just not the version needed for this site, and I STILL can,t get into the http://www.java.com web site to download it. FFS. I,m not a happy bat, not a happy bat atall.
