I now have two cut throats. They’re from Solingen, in Germany, which is the classic centre for these lethal instruments. They are very old – 1930s – but extremely sharp – and by that I mean bloody sharp, but I am about to get a strop.

They’re getting very popular because of the James Bond film, Skyfall, which itself jumped on the back of the growing obsession with retro. The future Moneypenny uses one to shave 007.

I liked the comment of the son of the author of the above article.

Any future Moneypennys want to shave me???? :)

You’d probably do a Castlereagh* on me, but all genuine applications considered :D/

*Castlereagh was the Foreign Secretary whose career was suddenly ended when his cut throat slipped, back in 1822

I’d be interested in finding out where you got them from, brother scep. I have an interest in cut-throat razors and gentlemen’s barbering. Have you heard of Mr Natty? or Triumph and Disaster?

You’re right to imply that Skyfall has had some impact on the new interest in traditional shaving, but it’s been growing for quite some time prior to that film.

    Hi rusty…

I got them from an in-law, who inherited them form his dad..they must date form the 1950s at the latest. Use e-bay carefully, but best get them already honed from a trusted site – I’ve not checked your site yet, but there is a very good US site with excellent advice.

Take care with them. It’s not just the fact that you might be chasing your Adam’s Apple across the floor if you’re careless (I exaggerate, but you can injure yourself – they are very vey sharp, and I’ve already suffered a slight cut to my thumb, and it stung for a few days).

The thing is that they need to be honed and stropped. You can get them cheap on Amazon, but they’re ripoffs. People complain that they’re not sharp, and eventually send them to a professional for honing – the professional sends them back saying they’re useless, can’t be honed.

If you don’t strop them – and a proper strop, not a leather belt – after each shave, hen it’s like shaving your face with a potato-peeler.

It literally takes several weeks, months even, to learn to shave properly. That blade is not to be handled carelessly, believe me. Take it slow, and use the best sites for learning. makes all the difference between a very satisfying shaving experience, and a fear of ever using them again.

You’re right about interest developing before Skyfall – it’s part of the fascination with retro, which itself is an unhappiness with the cheap throw-away culture surrounding us. The safety-blade is part of that culture, and can harm your face.

The best overall short introduction by far is http://www.shavemyface.com/downloads/The-Straight-Razor-Shave.pdf

read carefully, and ask further here or privately if you’re interested.
