Keeping somebody in prison for thirty years and then trotting them out to be executed does not seem like justice to me.

Yes, I agree.
But then I don’t believe in the death penalty – why do they kill people to teach people that killing people is wrong? :-k
Although I do agree with the US system in terms of murder in the 1st, or 2nd degree.
They also have proper sentences where life means life and no parole for murder in the 1st.
10 November, 2012 at 12:09 pm #514565I don’t believe in the death penalty either yet everyday (and I’m shifting the emphasis here..) animals get put to death without even a trial. This isn’t a criticism of the American justice system I know, but adds weight to the senseless and sometimes meaningless purpose of life for me. Humans and animals who don’t want to die, but having to because someone made the decision that they should.

What would be justice?

I agree on two counts.
- You can’t have justice if you take a life – that’s revenge. It may feel good but you have just taken the life of another human being, which is the same as the “criminal” who committed the murder in the first place. The state should not commit crimes as part of “justice,” no matter the provocation – that is the basis of a civilised society.
It is also torturing someone to make them wait for 30 years fearing being executed. That makes us no better than the criminal.
People should be made to think about their crimes, for the rest of their life if necessary.
I say these things with apologies to those who think differently. This is such an emotive topic and people have such different experiences.

Seems like the ultimate Justice to me…not from my point of view but in the fact the prisoner has the death penalty hanging over them for years and years and surely that is torture in itself? Along with appeals etc…hopes up (no death penalty) then hopes dashed that would also include friends and family of the prisoner..
I have never been completely for or completely against the death penalty..it’s a difficult subject,….I find it hard to justify taking someones life even though that person killed…and that person could be someone from my family….it makes you just as barbaric as them
The American system regards life meaning life in prison sentence years is in my opinion better than ours.10 November, 2012 at 1:02 pm #514570@terry wrote:

You’re putting me on the spot here. It’s just an open discussion to find out what other people think about it.
Oops sorry
I will be honest, I have mixed feeling about the death penalty.
On the one hand I consider life to be precious and not to be wasted. I can’t hold with the “eye for an eye” thinking. The death penalty also takes away a person’s opportunity to realise their error, to be rehabilitated, to maybe do some good in the world.
On the other hand I look at psychopaths, people who can never be rehabilitated, never released into society and I start to waver. As for being kept in prison for 30 years and then executed, every prisoner has the right of appeal and that can be drawn out for many years and often is. Who wouldn’t fight for their life to the bitter end?

The lives of animals is viewed by some people as cheap. Apparently they don’t have souls so can be slaughtered at will for fun or for whatever reason.
Food I can understand, but killing animals for fun, I don’t understand. Animals love their young, they have thoughts, feelings and intelligence and the ability to communicate.
The American justice system has its good points and bad points but they won’t allow a defendant to be tried twice for the same offence (double jeopardy) which I think is wrong.
10 November, 2012 at 3:57 pm #514572I don’t agree with the death penalty but I agree life should mean life…. if however a prisoner wishes to take his own life….I do wonder why we don’t let them… I know Im a hard woman :?
I agree with you about animals Panda… makes me laugh that some religions consider them to be lesser beings with no souls… future generations will laugh at our silly religions…… hopefully :)
