I know it’s yesterday’s news, but when the police go out looking for a man reportedly carrying a samurai sword and they end up tasering a blind man carrying a white stick I ask you, do we really want our police to be armed?

Given that the mistakes that happen are often by firearms specialists, who knows what would happen if every cop carried one.
Don’t even agree with tasers being used by non-specialists. If you have a cardiac condition they can kill you instantly – that’s a large proportion of the population who might be better off being hit by a bullet. So much for less than lethal force.
Anyway give the police guns, the criminals will only escalate too – more violence not less.
with the cuts and people losing their jobs it’s getting tougher out there………if it gets to the point where people really have had enough there could be trouble, maybe even riots again…….we may have to have armed police in the future whether we like it or not……to combat the vigilante groups that could form……..there are a lot of people who would like to take the law into their own hands because of the bad feeling on the street.

I see there’s a lot of trouble in Greece at the moment with vigilante groups.
Not sure about every officer being armed in the immediate future…but like Tinks I think it will happen eventually…I also think that arming every officer will result in more criminals having guns to protect themselves too…
Does anyone know what percentage of officers are actually armed at the moment?
The case recently of the 2 police officers killed maybe highlights more officers should have guns or perhaps more officers have guns in certain areas…if those women were armed would they still be here today? Of course no one knows the answer to that but there must be instances where criminals don’t shoot at armed officers for fear of being shot and killed themselves…shooting unarmed officers has no fear of that
