There seems to be more cover versions of songs now than ever before. A classic example was a very poor wish you were here at the olympic closing ceremony.I dont think a lot of his fans realised it was a cover.
I would say about 90% of the time the original always sounds better but maybe there are some more examples of covers outstripping the original.
Wilson Pickett or Bryan Ferry for example.
The original was more earthy but ferry gave it the cocktail hour treatment.
25 August, 2012 at 11:33 pm #507429quite often i tell my son and daughter that they should listen to the original artist and not just the cover version that they like…….so many times they have said ‘who?’ and laughed.
25 August, 2012 at 11:53 pm #507430i don’t mind covers as long as they play/ sing it as was originally done, not changing it around.
That said sometimes if its an oldie oldie i’ve never heard the original, but know the current one well, then the original ones is often annoying :lol:26 August, 2012 at 8:51 am #507431Some covers can be better than the original…. for instance Elvis Costello, Good Year for the Roses… when I heard it I thought it was a new song… Costello sang it moodily, telling us the story of his broken marriage
After three full years of marriage, it’s the first time that you haven’t
made the bed
I guess the reason were not talkin, there’s so little left to say we
haven’t said
While a million thoughts go racin through my mind, I find I haven’t said a word
from the bedroom the familiar sound of a babys cryin goes unheardAs you turn and walk away as the door behind you closes the only thing I have to say…… its been a good year for the roses
The original was part of the Nashville’s Country scene…. sung in a very melodic way… it has no atmosphere and is very easily forgotten…. give me Costello’s version every time :D
26 August, 2012 at 10:46 am #507432But what a good year for the roses
Many blooms still linger there
The lawn could stand another mowin’
It’s funny, I don’t even care
And when you turned and walked away
And as the door behind you closes
The only thing I know to say
It’s been a good year for the rosesIll have to dig out my George Jones back catalogue and see Mrs Teapot
26 August, 2012 at 12:38 pm #507433I loved Benny Hill’s cover for English Country Garden (Michael Holladay the original?)….
and a forget-me-not to remind me
to remember not to forget(his eyes looking up as though tryng to think of a better lyric)
