A police officer who took time off work after falsely claiming her daughter had cancer has been jailed for 18 months.

Rachel Hewitt, 39, of Ash Grove, South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, admitted fraud and misconduct in public office earlier this year at Hull Crown Court.

Hewitt claimed she had to miss shifts at North Yorkshire Police – where she no longer works – because her teenage daughter needed chemotherapy.

In fact, the court heard, her daughter was taking part in show-jumping events.

The offences relate to the period between 1 January 2009 and 10 October last year when Hewitt was a constable with North Yorkshire Police.

i’m glad she was jailed………it was a sick thing to do……… and those that are out there making sure we all abide by the law are certainly not above it themselves …….stick another 6 months on it

How terrible for her daughter too… to know her Mum did that… and her whole family.. the shame….. I know she has to be punished but no punishment will match the shame she and her family will endure for ever.

She was jailed for telling a lie?

We’d better start building some more prisons….

and fraud ……and lets not forget she was a copper

as abhorrent as this is the lies she told i agree with terry, what was the fraud for did she take paid leave or unpaid ? i guess paid hence the fraud ?
But even so far better to get her pay the money back that she defrauded and do some community service, preferably including working with sick children. She will end up costing us tax papers a fortune for going on her jollies, which makes little sense.

Actually her colleagues collected money to help pay for the daughters expenses…. travel that sort of thing….. and she accepted the money… maybe thats what the fraud charge was about.
