A thread to let loose on what you think of certain films.. be they new cinema releases, the latest DVD / Blu Ray offerings, what’s coming up on TV, your personal choices or simply any films you wish to recommend or warn people about.

    Hey.. rate them too.

    =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> CLASSIC

MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL

Well, with Tom Cruise all over the papers again, where better to start than with his most recent outing as IMF super agent Ethan Hunt. The hugely entertaining MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series does exactly what it says on the tin and although not going much further than the previous three movies, GHOST PROTOCOL is certainly the best of the bunch.

Plot wise it’s pretty basic fare, and blissfully so as lengthy, wordy expositions do nothing but harm this particular genre (as witnessed in the very first MI film) that in a nutshell sees our hero and his tight knit band of fellow agents hunt down a megalomaniac nuke freak intent on turning the planet into a giant toxic mushroom. This trip down the classic Bond-esque arch-nutter trail should be outworn by now, but we all know that these charmers are a cinematic indulgence we always seem to allow ourselves.
Anyway, for reasons that become apparent (ie the Kremlin being turned into mash) Cruiser and his cohorts have been “disavowed” and ostracised from the whole US intelligence network (boo hoo) and left to plough their own restricted furrow in nabbing this terrorist geezer (boo hiss) with the most limited resources when it comes to hardware, back up and funding.
In the group we have uber geek Simon Pegg, reprising his role in the last film and getting a helluva lot more to chew on here as a comedic yet very useful tech nerd.. uber squeeze Paula Patton flexing her extremely attractive limbs as a tough as nails, but soft on the inside, drool inducingly beautiful female agent and secretive, iffy intentioned analyst Jeremy Renner backing up the Cruiser’s wonderful action sequences with evident relish in preparation for his upcoming central role in the new Bourne movies reboot.
This is all grand stuff and everything flies by in a smooth, unobtrusive fashion that Director Brad Bird (up till now known mostly for his animated works with Pixar) steers and navigates seamlessly.
The three major acts of GHOST PROTOCOL take us from Moscow to Dubai to Mumbai with each setting gifting us some extravagant action sequences and a healthy shot of suspense to keep the brain ticking.
So.. Yeah.. highly entertaining and well worth a watch!

MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL is currently available on DVD / Blu Ray and On Demand TV

    The Guard

Loved this film. Very gentle but dark humour.

This Anglo-Irish black comedy thriller stars Brendan Gleeson as a sleazy, drug-talking, whoring policeman who turns out to be the least corruptible cop in western Ireland.
Of all the local police, only he is of the slightest use to drug-busting, fish-out-of-water fed Don Cheadle as the American tries to arrest a tough trio of hoodlums — the funniest of them played by Mark Strong.

It has a sparkling dialogue and is witty and also poignant. The plot is weak, and it has shades of Hot Fuzz about it, but it reminded me of a kind of Irish version of a Tarantino.

    Loved it

It’s a way of saying “I don’t think you’re going to like what I’m about to tell you, but please don’t get upset with me, I’m only saying it because if I didn’t the sky would fall in, honest”

Thanks for the reviews by the way, I haven’t paid attention to what films are out for a while, I’ll check out both of them.
