What was your favourite Blyton book as a kid?

I loved The Island of Adventure. Every kid’s dream to find and explore secret tunnels to keep them occupied during the summer hols. :P

    the Secret seven series

The Naughtiest Girl in the School series.

I read that they took out the reference to the coloured man in The Island of Adventure.

I can understand that because to call black ppl coloured is rather un PC these days but they didn’t replace it with black. Strange.

I was a real bookworm as a child – still am – but for some strange reason I don’t remember reading much Enid Blyton. I have a vague recollection of starting a Famous Five book and not really getting into it.

As for changing older books to make them politically correct, I disagree with this. Books are a reflection of the time in which they were written, using the language of the time. If you rewrote Shakespeare or Dickens to remove the references to Jews there would be uproar, they were commentators of their time through their writing. So it should be with all books.

I agree, however, Shakespeare and Dickens are not on my bookshelf – too much at school! Not into Mills’n’Boon, but love P.D. James – whoedunnits in an oldie worldie way, but very present! I have a friend who knows her – says she sits in cafes and watches peoples, and that is how she gets her characters! Her books are brill.

    heres my take on them
JULIAN,posh snob always had to take control
DICK,well the name says it all really
ANNE,quiet, demure, probably stayed a virgin till she was about 38
GEORGINA,ah well now then what can i say, brave, bold ,feisty, secret lemon, odds on she had ginger hair
TIMMY, every kid wanted a dog like timbo
    PERIPHERAL CHARACTER
UNCLE QUENTIN, get a life mate and stop blowing test tubes
