A photograph of students from a Birmingham school and an indication of the language divide that exists there.

My colleague was born in Hong Kong, speaks fluent English and Mandarin. Her skills, with an ad hoc second job as an interpreter, are in much demand with the growth of China. Her own successful business looms.
If only I’d paid more attention to languages @ school. :(

Je ne comprends pas! :P
Ich weiss nicht! :P
So are you saying that it’s ok to be taught to speak other languages at school, but it’s not ok to speak them before you go to school?

I’m saying that multiculturalism is benefitting everyone but the English.
Gordon Brown has a lot to answer for.
7 June, 2012 at 10:50 pm #498455My dad came here in 1956 from Jamaica.
Gordon Brown was aged 5 at the time.
I can speak a bit of Jamaican patrois as well as English.

I can speak chav as well as English, but no matter how you dress it up it’s clear there’s something wrong (and different )with this country. And it’s more to do with The Labour Party’s open-door policy in recent years than anything else.
7 June, 2012 at 11:19 pm #498457Part of the open door policy is that the English can go and live in any EU country.
If I had a pound for everytime I heard an English person say they would love to live in Spain, or France or Italy but don’t because they can’t speak the language and won’t learn it, then I’d be considerably better off than I am now.
English I believe is spoken in more countries than any other language. We used to have an Empire but now it’s called a Commonwealth. I guess it’s pay back time for when “our flag floated over many oceans.

I agree Panda. I can get by in French and understand Italian, Dutch and German though through lack of usage am not able to speak the languages so well. I do find it sad that there are lots of people choosing to live here who make no attempt to integrate into the local community or to try and learn the language.
These days many countries are multi-cultural, take for example the US, Australia, most EU countries just as a small example. The picture could be from any country these days to be honest and I personally find it’s use quite sad as there is nothing to substantiate it.
Colonialsism was alright when it was the UK painting the world map red but the spin off has to be accepted. My father in law came to the UK in the 50’s from India though he is of Irish descent and his ancestor’s were in the British Army.
8 June, 2012 at 12:20 am #498459Hmmm. Something’s wrong. I actually agree with you J about it was ok when the UK were painting the map of the World red but it’s not ok now we are being “invaded.”
Would we have so many Indian or African ppl coming here to live if there had been no British Raj or The Scramble for Africa?
Would we have so many ppl from European countries coming here to live if we hasn’t poked our noses into their affairs?
The English language is spoken around the World and possibly mandatory to learn in many countries. So of course ppl are more likely to come here to live! They can speak the language so they can integrate.
The English on the other hand…
