Today, we poor Irish souls vote yet again on another European Union treaty, although this time around it has the uber sexy title of Fiscal Compact. As ever, it’s conveniently convoluted enough to drive most of us around the bend trying to understand its complexities. In a rather generalised nutshell, the apparent purpose of it all is to put safeguards in place to restrict member states from going loolah with borrowing and/or inabilities to balance their books. It also copper fastens the whole idea of emergency funding being available to any member states that meet a certain justifiable criteria to avail of such financial aid.
It’s no big surprise that all of this has come about in the wake of the whole Greek debacle and indeed my own Nation’s profligacy in such matters.
Supporters say it will put an end to rogue and speculative borrowing, stimulate growth and investment and eventually return financial markets and the EU as a whole to a functioning state of stability over the next few years.
Opponents see it as a passport to continued austerity. Removing budgetary control and a degree of fiscal sovereignty from individual states in the pursuit of federalism, with the crucial issue of reckless lending not being fully addressed. Nations continuing to feel the pain of bank debt and the concerns of private, unsecured bond holders. Certain undefined parameters yet to be clarified are also of concern to the No campaign.Ireland must ratify any such change to its constitution by referendum.
A majority of member states have fast tracked it through their respective parliaments.
The UK and Czech Republic are non signatories.Any opinions on this?
What are your opinions on the EU as it stands now?
Part of the problem or part of the solution to our economic woes? What is your take on the European Union in general?
Triumph in Diversity or Federal Frankenstein?
Somewhere in between? And please.. Let’s try keep it civil huh?

This is the main reason im voting NO.
When it comes to europe i dont fully understand it and i dont see why we are paying for unsecrured loans.

It’s logical that our ties with Europe should be formalised where necessary. The Union isn’t perfect, but that’s the way with treaties. Being outside the Union would not be perfect either. We have a vested interest in Peace in Europe and should be in a position to play as full a part as possible in maintaining it.
As to this treaty on which you’re voting Pepper, unfortunately, the banks control things and British people have long voted with their feet and at the ballot box for that to continue. I’m not sure the treaty will protect ordinary people sufficiently from either their capricious banks or mendacious politicians, but I’m glad to hear that Irish people are actually sufficiently engaged with the process to be driven round the bend by its complexities.
