The Government say hundreds of thousands of children face being taken off the special needs register because they have been wrongly labelled as requiring extra help. I will always be an advocate for giving children with learning difficulties extra help but what I really can’t stand and makes my blood boil are these parents who will go to many lengths to get their child labelled simply because they either don’t have the time or patience to deal with their problems and need to find an excuse for their childs bad behaviour.
I have recently come into contact with a women who firstly told me her child was ‘Gifted’ and indeed they are very bright and articulate for their age but it was soon apparent they were not ‘Gifted’ Then on getting to know the child better and witnessing the rudeness and constant vying for attention the mother decided the child must indeed be autistic. So off she trots to an Educational Psychologist and several hundreds of pounds later produced a tick sheet for me to fill in which was then returned and analysed along with the Psychologists findings. Not satisfied with the the conclusion of that report (because of course she still didn’t have a label) off she goes to the GP and manages to get an appointment with a Psychologist from the local Authority.
And any poor bugga who really has a need to see these people knows how hard it is to get that far with them! Their report was inconclusive but recommended the parents and child attend ‘Family sessions’ , so still no label.
I have a label for the parents and it’s Denial!
If anyone has ever tried to get their child statemented because they really do need help and fight for the funding they so badly need I am quite sure they would want to throttle these time wasters as I do.

Oh my goodness me … well said!! Frustrates the hell out of me too, as SENCo … timewasters are often more persistent too, which is doubly annoying!
