Sorta following on from Mrs Teapot’s thread Ba Ba Black Sheep thread (which I agree with, PC gone mad) how do you feel about Black History Month?
http://www.black-history-month.co.uk/
Can this be construed as racist as it does not celebrate the history of non black ppl?
I’m half white, half black (and not just because I’m a panda) so I have mixed thoughts about this. Part of me thinks it’s good, part of me thinks it’s time black ppl moved on and stop what is obviously “segregation” in this “celebration.”
Surely black ppl have white heroes too?
Part of me also thinks if there was a “White History Month,” the PC brigade would attack it as racist / white supremacy propaganda.
Thoughts?

As I understand it….and I could be wrong one of the main reasons for having the history month is to educate and inform all of us on the contribution that black people have made throughout history. I sort of agree with Morgan freeman who said why do we need just one month to celebrate it? but thinking about it black history has been neglected especially in schools so its no bad thing to bring it to the fore.
Should it just be history though? maybe it should celebrate black culture and history generally

I imagine that racism would find an excuse without Black History Month, so I don’t really think it ‘encourages’ it. A good friend of mine says reading “Roots” opened her eyes to a whole different experience in a really positive way. Black History Month can enrich the lives of anyone who engages with it. It usually celebrates wider cultures and encourages a different reading of history in general, as it doesn’t simply focus on the conquerors.
I hope we can welcome a day when we don’t need a special month for neglected areas of history, when young people are supplied with answers which links them and the people around them to the past. I believe this is done better now than when I was in school.

The two are not mutually incompatible, neither in competition with each other. I suspect the reasons behind the absence of Scottish history in Scottish schools when you were growing up are the same as the reasons why Black history was absent. I would hope things have changed or what on earth is that Scottish Assembly for?
