Thats probablay cause of Freddie Krugger, nightmare on elm street had a stripy Red and Green jumper.
I always heard it the way – Blue and green should not be seen, unless with something inbetween.

Sorry Lucy but that made me laugh
Red and green precedes Freddie Krugger. It’s said to come from our nautical history; if you see red and green at sea you are probably seeing both port and starboard lights of a ship which means it’s coming straight at you!Earlier than that is “Red and green should never be seen except upon a fool” in which the fool is a jester and in medieval times red and green quarters were the colour of a jester.
Of course there’s also “Red and green should never be seen except upon an Irish Queen.” Don’t know much about that one except that many Irish people don’t seem to have heard it!
“Blue and green should never be seen” also seems to have two sources, one is the poem “Blue & green should never be seen. Fawn should never be worn. Only wear yellow if you are mellow. Never wear brown when in town.”
There’s more but I can’t remember the rest…we learnt it in needlework classes but the teacher had such a droning voice I used to shut off!The other source is also nautical with one saying that green was seen by superstitious sailors to be an unlucky colour for a boat and the more practical explanation that if a green boat capsized in the ocean it would blend in with the sea and be less visible to potential rescuers, hence the additional bit of “without a colour inbetween”.
Anyone still awake out there?
21 March, 2012 at 4:55 pm #490734Yes someone told me it was something to do with shipping.
Didn’t know about the jester though Jen.
The red and green I heard goes like this .. Red and green should never be seen except upon an Irish Coleen.
Also I don’t know why but my mum used to say green was a very unlucky
colour to wear at a wedding.Loved the Freddie Kruger idea …Lucy.
