In an attempt to feel better about themselves, people will often strike out at others in the hope that they will be lifted up by bringing others down. While this may provide relief short term, in the long term nothing is done to get at the root of the problem. We must not confuse humour with shame.

Well said…and sometimes those roots run deep.

Maybe…… and maybe some people just get a kick out of being mean to others. I sort of believe in good and evil…. there doesn’t always have to be a deep rooted reason why some people are mean….. its sort of a comfort though to think there might be …. that means their meanness is forgivable.

There is always a reason, that reason might explain the meanness but it doesn’t make it ok.
Forgiveness not in the reason, it is in the heart of the one who is hurt, the victim, they have the power to forgive or not. Forgiving does not mean forgetting but it does mean not holding on to the poisonous ill-feeling that hurts the victim and doesn’t touch the abuser who is usually oblivious and careless.
