I wonder if this part of the forum is not as popular as it used to be, due to the fact that every debate posted on here involves clicking some tedious link to another site?
Many of us do not like to click on unknown links and for this fact I think the art of debate in this area is dying a death. There used to be some very good and interesting conversation went on in this area – where people actually offered up their own ideas, thoughts and contributions – rather than just trawling the internet to offer up a link to someone elses.
As soon as I open one of these threads now and see an orange link word I am instantly turned off to even bother looking. Urgh.
Please bring back the old format of debate, where nimble fingers did the talking and your own brain offered up the pros and cons of a situation or topic.
Just a thought……
22 July, 2011 at 9:32 am #474150I agree but not for the reasons of not wanting to open up unknown attachments but if you have a point to make surely you can do it without running to google.
Express your own opinions and not the internets!!!.
22 July, 2011 at 12:02 pm #474151Personally I think a lot of people stopped posting in this section because there opinions being constantly belittled and being told that they had to prove them and come up with facts. That is the reason so many people turned to google and started adding links to there posts.
Opinions are just that, they are based on what people think. Most people have them, some people agree with, some people dont, but that is the joy of OPINION and discussion. Nothing needs to be proved and factualised. It is simply an opinion, so there can be no EPIC fails or the alike. Which i think you will find, is why many stopped coming into this section.
22 July, 2011 at 12:14 pm #474152i’ve only been in JC since Jan 2010 and since ive been coming here this section has always seemed to be Gaz’s conspiracy theories- i dont mind them but also dont pay much attention to them either.
He like everyone is entitled to post what he wants but i do agree with you too Andy, people should relax and try to see the others persons point of view and not dismiss just cause it doesnt match what they say.

22 July, 2011 at 4:46 pm #474154Andy and Lucy pretty much summed it up for me.
22 July, 2011 at 5:31 pm #474155There’s a surprise, not your laughable attempt and failures to show me in a bad light then?

You mean you would rather people like youself post any old shit without being called on to support it?

You still don’t get it do you?
Sharing opinions, debating, is not about trying to show anyone in a bad light, it’s not about succeeding or failing, it’s not about demanding facts and evidence to back up opinions based on personal experience whilst refusing to do the same yourself, it’s not about belittling and deriding anyone who has a different opinion from yourself.
It’s about having a discussion that involves listening to others with an open mind and accepting that there are many different ways of viewing the same subject and many different opinions, not just those that match yours. If you can’t do that then people stop engaging with you and it becomes a monologue…or hadn’t you noticed how often you talk to yourself on your threads?
22 July, 2011 at 7:00 pm #474158The trouble is that practically any viewpoint, about anything, can be supported from some esoteric corner of the net. Which means that the discussion then gets chocca with secondary and usually confusing sources, which quite often have a larger agenda than the JC topic in question, and as Mel has pointed out this completely detracts from the rhythm of a good message board thread where posters use their own words.
Everybody ‘googles’, but then someone like gazlan will feel inferior about their own argument, and lacking in confidence will use another site that is slightly less peer-reviewed than gazlan-reviewed.
So, agreed, people shouldn’t link too much. Nor stand on soap boxes while attempting to type.
