a king with ambitions to conquer all of England had got as far as the rollrights when up popped a witch
She challenged the king with these wordsseven long strides shalt thou take and if Long Compton thou canst see,King of England thou shalt be
off went the king shouting
stick stock, stone as king of England I shall be known
On his seventh stride the groud rose up before himin a long mound some times know as the Arch Druids barrow. The witch laughed and declared
As Long Compton thou canst seeking of England thou shall not be.Rise up stick and stand still stone. For King of England thou shalt be none,Thou and thy men hoar stones shall be and i my self an eldern tree

well done jen
bet youve never been thoughi first went their the day after my father died
in the early 80s
was a strange day a friend who was living in antibe came home for christmas
the day after boxing day we went to visit a friend in oxford
i was a bit numb over my old fella
didnt feel particularly sad more relief if im honest
any way on our way back from oxford we called in at the stones
a magical mystical place
read the words i posted and have sort of stuck in my mind for 27 or 28 years
when my kids were young we went there several times
was a cold or wet sunday afternoon past time
the kids loved it
my son more so than my daughter
even now he is 23 he would still be up for a visit if i suggested it
they were once used as a murder scene in morse some years ago
the first time i went it was free to visitthe last time it was 10p
today it was a pound in an honesty box
i remember once going and there was an old boy giving out leaflets and hens raking in the grass by the stones
i was workng near by today its about 25 miles from where i live
its a wonderfull bit of country side on the warwickshire oxfordshire border
any way we finished early so i took my young assistant up there
he was as enchanted as i was the first time i wentso i thought i would just share it all with you

:D26 May, 2011 at 6:26 pm #469271Lovely story thin.
I know what you mean about mystical places, I live quite near to Bolton Abbey and I often walk to a place known locally as dusty bluebells. Maybe in a previous life I was there.. I dont know but I definately feel a connection just as you described… a feeling of peace. Have to say there is another place called Leathley which is also local and I feel really uncomfortable there and avoid it if I can… maybe its genetic memory… who knows?
26 May, 2011 at 6:48 pm #469272Just checked out the website. I am going to put it on my places to visit list.
