I realise that this is a very emotive topic and all will have different views but because of a book i h ave recently read i felt i wanted to open this discussion.
I accept that prostitution is not an ideal situation. however, I do feel that it is a valid and necessary “evil”. There are some ppl, male and female, who, for mental, emotional or health reasons, can not and never will be able to , form a normal loving relationship, Nevertheless, they still have physical needs. Prostitution, in all its forms, solves and caters for these needs. It it surely a viable answer to what may be the possible alternatives.
If prostitution was recognised and legalised as i believe it is in some other countries it would be a far better way than now. it could be taxed, thereby bringing in much needed government finances, health matters would be easier as the people involved would be subject, as a term of their “employment” to health checks, and it would remove the pimp and drugs aspect of it.
My opinion anyway, for what its worth.
10 May, 2011 at 12:44 pm #467813Interesting question Eve… Should prostitution be legalised?… well the arguments for are:
It would reduce crime, improve public health, increase tax revenue, help people out of poverty, get prostitutes off the streets, and allow consenting adults to make their own choices.
Opponents believe that legalising prostitution would lead to increases in sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, global human trafficking, and violent crime including rape and murder. They contend that prostitution is inherently immoral, commercially exploitative, empowers the criminal underworld, and promotes the repression of women by men.
So which argument do you agree with? In Sweden its buying sex not selling it that is illegal, interesting idea although opponents say its impossible to police.
I am against legalising prostitution… I think that society is eroding at an alarming rate and this is just another step in the wrong direction I’m not sure what the answer is, there does need to be some safeguards put in place but the thought of brothel on every high street is not a solution I care to see.
10 May, 2011 at 2:59 pm #467814It has been reported that some young professional people have left university and are in the early part of their career with such huge debts that they have taken up prostitution as a way to boost their income working nights and hopefully clear their money problems.

How terrible is that Tinks… both my kids went to university and they were lucky that as parents we were able to fund them so they left with no debts. Having said that they both worked part time whilst at Uni… so provided themselves with money too. The new University charges are ridiculous though, imagine £9,000 per year just for a degree and no guarantee of a job at the end of it….. farcical!! a real recipe for student demonstrations and social unrest!
11 May, 2011 at 5:18 am #467816It’s all about the messages you send and who, if anyone, you want to punish.
Prostitution is going to happen whatever we do. Making the people who do it into criminals doesn’t help clean up the streets. Better to regulate or de-criminalise – or at least think carefuly about how we use existing laws, like “living off immoral earnings”.
Big difference between someone who exploits large numbers of vulnerable people working as prostitutes, and someone who rents out rooms to get girls off the streets. The laws we have potentially treat sex traffickers and people who provide services to sex workers exactly the same. And all sex workers are not poor down trodden people, many enjoy their jobs and the flexibility it gives them, and do not feel forced to do the work in any way.
I am am concerned that legalising protitution sends a message that society approves of people being forced to make a living that way – a bit like decriminalising drugs might send the message that drugs are OK.
On balance though I think taking the criminality out of protitution is the best solution. We could then concentrate on the real crimes like kidnapping, slavery, extortion and protection rackets, which are part of the shadier end of the business, while letting other people get on with providing a service without Police harassment. We could also support the the more vulnerable, whose lives are spiralling out of control, who need a criminal conviction like a hole in the head.
11 May, 2011 at 11:25 am #467817Very difficult one this one, even to put across on the boards.
Legalising it has its pros and cons and all the points put across so far have been very good ones.
I also read a book about a woman who went in Prostituion Eve..Call me Elizabeth…. it was. Which book did you read btw, you never said?
Even before I had read that book I never judged prostitution as just wrong. I do feel however there must be other means to make ends meet. Sorry to repeat myself, but I have mentioned my mum being widowed at the age of 32 and she brought 4 of us up on her own. She worked although very hard and long long hours. There are other means, to keep you out of danger, and what often happens a life of addiction to drugs.11 May, 2011 at 1:30 pm #467818It’s all about self gratification really; as long as people continue to have these urges then prostitutes will remain. The simple fact that this is a business, however lucrative, shows there is a requirement for it. Many people marry their partners for instance, only to find out later that their needs cannot be met by their partner in the bedroom. The main issue here I think is the ability to overcome these urges, there is such a thing as celibacy, restraint and not forgetting of course DIY. After-all, the use of a prostitute is merely to rid yourself of an urge, at a cost.
Isn’t it true that there is someone for everyone?
Far better we concentrate on rewarding people in legitimate employment, changing the values put upon people in their respective rolls within this society and allowing them to live in a dignified way with a dignified means to a dignified end. Given the slanted society we now live in, this will not happen soon.
12 May, 2011 at 2:12 am #467819DIY Gaz? That’s not free – you have to pay for the materials!
Seriously though, despite the practical approach of my previous post, I am a romantic at heart. From that point of view I’ve got to agree with Gaz about the ideal being in a really good relationship with a partner.
Life aint like that for everyone sadly and some people will feel the need to go to protitutes/sex workers etc. Not my choice or something I wish for my family, but so long as someone will pay, others will do it. Some people also genuinely enjoy doing it as a job. So if we can’t get away from it, I would just prefer to:
– support the vulnerable so they never have to feel forced into it; and
– make sure we are only turning people who kidnap, enslave or extort into criminals, rather than people quietly getting on with their business. There are worse things in the world. Live and let live. “Let he who is without guilt” and all that………..

No.
12 May, 2011 at 1:36 pm #467821It kinda is legal atm, its just called being an escort.
I do agree with it being legalised due to revenue, help stop illegal sex trade to the point of why pay for someone you know is doing it against their will and it could be regulated to make sure the prozzie’s are safe and free from any diease.
There will always be sick ppl out their that will try to make it theirs by keeping it underground but IF POLICED PROPERLY i truely beleive it could stop the sex slaves. Also most prostitutes are on drugs due to their pimps keeping them down, if legal they could make money (if thats how they want to do it) be clean and safe.
