Whilst I see the value of educational toys, and of course all kids love dressing up and pretending to be adults, I have never felt totally comfortable with toys that encourage our children to role-play and especially not things like pretty pink kitchens for the girls and blue mechanics sets for the boys. When my niece insisted at 5 years old that she HAD to have a Barbie and the accessories, I was the one buying her Barbie’s motorbike and speedboat…she was the one repainting them because she hated pink!

However this toy is, for me, a step too far.

    Educational or inappropriate?

I’m all for answering childrens questions as openly and honestly as possible but do our children really need toys like this?

But if I had a baby and would breastfeed then I guess Lilah would copy me and would see that when I’m out I’d cover up my boobs even when feeding so if she wanted to do that then I guess she’d learn from it not to fling her bits around unececarily and that can only be a good thing right? x :o

Money making non-sense. I suppose she can be slurping on the new titty ice-cream while feeding this rubber replica.

Jeeeese-o.. !! My mind was screaming ” whatever NEXT” as i read this. But then i scared myself and had to stop reading.
thats sick. there is nothing more natural than breast feeding as we all know, but the imagery of lots of wee girls going about with a dolly clutched to exposed breasts, near made me bring up my coffee..

    /shudders.

If it had been April 1st i would have thought it to be an April fool joke.

All the beasts are going to be in dreamland if this turns out to be a best seller.I know the kids will be told to keep their bits covered while using it but I wouldn’t mind betting that plenty don’t and so giving the pervs plenty to ogle at.

I thought exactly the same YC seems like a paedophiles dream toy to me. Just another disgusting example of making our children into mini adults, it sexualises (is that a word?) girls too encouraging behaviours inappropriate for their natural development.

    Weird and should be banned!

I can understand your point about the Role-Play toys, but, I don’t totally disagree with it altogether. I think this toy is just forcing children to grow up too quickly.

It’s not a bad thing, but it is. What I mean is, it’s totally innocent, but not.

I’ve seen my little girls act breast-feeding out with their dolls. I didn’t see the need to chastise them for it or call for them to stop. After all, they’d seen their mother feeding their little brother and this kind of play, dolls and prams and what have you, is all about mimicking and preparation, I reckon. You wouldn’t want them to get the idea that there was something wrong about the subject.

Equally, I don’t really see a need for a toy that prolongs what ordinarily would be a five minute phase. On the whole, I’m sure the kids would prefer a cricket set or a box of lego for Chrimbo.

I played with my dolls for hours pikey… and yes its part of play to mimic what adults do.

I have to admit though it never occurred to me as a child to try to place a dolls lips onto my bare nipples so it could suck effectively. I think this toy is a step too far, maybe it could be used as an educational tool in parenting classes for older children.

I think there’s quite a difference between children play-acting and mimicking what adults do, which is a natural part of growing up, and having toys that actively encourage such play for longer periods than they would naturally.

Like you Mrs T, it would never have occured to me to do such a thing as a child despite my mother having breastfed both of my siblings. As for parenting classes for older children, there are much more realistic dolls that fully mimic a baby – a friend’s daughter had one last year, each pupil was paired with someone of the opposite sex (no same-sex couples, very nuclear family!) and both had the responsibility for a realistic baby doll for a week. Her daughter went from “I want a family of 5, and I want them when I’m young” to “IF I have any kids it’s no more than 2 and not until my 30s”.

Children’s playing at being adults is usually short lived anyway cos let’s face it, us adults are pretty boring compared to the monsters and magic of a child’s vivid imagination.

I also don’t see the need for a doll to be put on the market solely for the purpose of nuturing and encouraging breast feeding. Is a child play acting this at such an early age going to think I must breast feed my own child, or is it thinkiing I can’t wait to have a baby so I can do it for real? Don’t know about anyone else but when I saw the top to be worn my jaw dropped even more! Why is it a crop top for young girls? So many things about this I find uncomfortable. Will the parents of these children stop them mimicking the act when outdoors? Because woah……not good!
Not sure if I’m recalling correctly but I’m sure there was an article in the paper recently about breast not necessarily being best. Recent studies found that there was no conclusive evidence that breast fed children were healthier from the offset than children bottle fed.
I was unable to breast feed my youngest, he was so much healthier growing up, with absolutely no illnesses whatsover, he was walking at 9 months old, extremely advanced (I know we all say that ) mentally and is 14 yrs old and 6’3. My eldest was breastfed for 3 months and he was always suffering niggly things as a child and was a very very skinny kid and hardly ate.
Sorry for going slightly off tangent there.
