Considering the events of recent weeks in Arab lands, are we seeing positive or negative developments?
We’ve all been reasonably happy to see the Arab peoples in bondage if it meant regular deliveries of the real black stuff, and we’ve been happy for our representatives to pal around with some real monsters if it meant buckets of cash for jet fighter makers in Telford and cluster bomb manufacturers in Guildford.
The apple cart lies upset. Will we be glad or sorry?
25 February, 2011 at 11:43 pm #461342It depends what the outcome of the revolutions is. If the democratic revolutions lead to weak governments Al-Qaeda will be able to create instability and grab power, so that Arab north Africa all becomes one huge Islamic state with a Taliban type government.
That’s what happened in Iran in 1979, although the fundamentalists were shia not sunni.
The pro-Western Shah of Iran was deposed by a popular uprising that resulted in a socialist government that was swept away within days by a second revolution, the Islamic one led by Ayatollah Khomeini.26 February, 2011 at 12:52 am #461343I wish I understood the implications of it all too. Maybe no-one does right now.
I did read that Libya only accounts for 2% of the worlds oil production so even if that stopped the short fall could be dealt with by other producers, hopefully whatever regime takes over will want to continue exporting quickly…. but who knows all the implications… bit scary really :? :? :?

26 February, 2011 at 12:31 pm #461344Perhaps the West should just find an alternative to oil and leave the Arabs to get on with it.
Teapot it seems, is only expressing concern about oil not the Arab people – that’s human compassion for ya!

I get the feeling this was out of concern for the Libyan public If the exports stop then the Libyan public will suffer even more than they already are.
