Simon Cremer was forced to pay out £13,000 in compensation to a former employee who stole from him. In September 2008 Cremer, who runs a flooring firm, discovered that one of his staff, Mark Gilbert, had secretly cashed a forged company cheque worth £845.
Furious at both the crime and the betrayal Cremer got hold of Gilbert and placed around his neck a sign that read: “Thief: I stole £845. Am on my way to police station.” He then frogmarched Gilbert to Witham police station.
The result was that Gilbert was given a smack on the wrists and told not to do it again, and the employer (Cremar) payed his thieving colleague £13,000 in compensation for humiliating him!
Once again the thief ends up richer while the victim is hammered. What a strange world we live in, personally I think we should do more naming and shaming… what do you think?

18 February, 2011 at 9:50 am #461234I remember this story from when it was first in the news and just knew thered be some backlash.I didnt think it would be so ridiculously severe though.
Human rights? More like its once again a case of the lunatics taking over the asylum.
18 February, 2011 at 10:00 am #461235We put pictures of our shoplifters in the window asking for names from the public. We have ALWAYS got names. Law abiding citizens are apalled and always happy to help even if they know that person. We then pass the names on to the police.
I agree with naming and shaming. Why should someone think its ok to just take somthing that doesn’t belong to them?
It’s these ridiculous compensation claims that need to be stopped.18 February, 2011 at 5:10 pm #461236@mrs_teapot wrote:

a clear case of some one over stepping the mark
he got two people to asist him in this
and held him captive agaist his will
he should have just called the police
he held his own lil trial and found the man guilty and dished out his own sentance
he is lucky he didnt end up in prison him selfthe moral of the story
dont take the law in to your own hands
and as far as i know the man in question has never been convicted of any theft he claimed to be owed the money18 February, 2011 at 5:22 pm #461237If Simon Cremer was not 100% about the theft he would not have frogmarched him down to the police station the way he did.
We had 2 incidents ourselves with shoplifters in this last week. Detained both in the shop whilst the police got here. The second one…Monday’s incident was a female. She continuosly tried to leave the shop and I physically restrained her again and again. Telling her I can touch her and I will touch her to restrain her, none of her crap will wash with me.
18 February, 2011 at 6:29 pm #461238Ill have to remember not to take the law into my own hands if i ever find a burglar in the house on a night and he accidentally falls down the stairs. :-
