Day in day out you hear about bullying whether it been in the work place or even with your children at school and of course over the internet.

The work place is the issue I’m concerned with at the moment. I’m quite sure a large percent of us hate our bosses and even colleagues we have to spend our whole day with. I work with girls a lot younger than myself and see them daily being brow beaten into submission and not being able to express themselves and reach their full potential for fear of losing their job.

Because they are young and don’t have as much experience as older employees doesn’t mean they have nothing to contribute. In fact many are eager and have fresh ideas which are never allowed to come into fruition because some old bag thinks they know best and can’t cope with change.

Logically if a younger person stood up to these bullies, what would happen? Would the bully back down? Could they get a person sacked for being keen and having something to contribute? No probably not but how will a young person ever see the power they have to stop it unless someone in the workplace supports them and guides them in the right direction?

I just wish older people could see the benefits younger people can bring to a workplace, instead of being so far up their own craggy arses they can’t see the wood for the trees.

    Tom

Well said, Blossom, and I agree wholeheartedly.

The reason they are bullied is because the older colleagues feel threatened. Smart enthusiastic younger person comes along, it makes them feel obsolete and insecure, so they resort to putting the younger colleague down “showing them their place” so to speak.

Instead of bullying, perhaps they should simply work harder then they’d have nothing to feel threatened about!

I totally agree about the benefits of fresh perspectives and the need to have teams with different views and ideas. I also agree that people shouldn’t be patronised and bullied in the workplace.

Unfortunately with little option of alternative employment these days, it is getting easier to abuse people without any repercussions. Sadly in my experience, if someone tries hard enough and is manipulative enough, you can get rid of almost anyone, or at least bully them until they go off sick or leave.

How many people would really go as far as an industrial tribunal? Most who do never work again in any promoted position.

    :(

Blimey. It’s like an episode of The Apprentice. I had a job once. A vain experiment designed to instill the suffering of the martyred proletariat into my soul. I can’t say I cared for it very much. I find myself unsuited to the whole shebang.

I hope, come the revolution, that there will be a special place in the nation’s heart for narcotically nourished dilettantes of no practical use.

Quite true! He’s gone and cornered the old market, though. All I can say is thank Bob Marley’s Spliff Tin for Uncles and their allowances. Manna.

I agree Blossom, youngsters often have new ideas and can sometimes see things that someone who has been in a role for sometime just doesnt see, cant see for the wood for the trees scenario, that said alot of young people can be rather lazy and lack in self motivation i think this stems from their upbringing though. Sometimes this can be frustrating for good old fashioned older hard workers. What they often don’t realise is the more they put into these young people the easier their own job will become. As with most things in life, you get back what you put in and investing not just money but time, understanding and patience in people is rarely foolhardy.

i agree also , we need to look after our youngsters at work , they are sometimes overly keen to impress , they are oblivious to danger , we need to keep them safe form themselves as well as the bulllies

Thought this was going to be in defense of Tom…

I don’t defend bullying but sadly it’s part human social behaviour. I’ve witnessed workplace bullying in small companies and in the public sector. I’ve even witnessed it in the voluntary sector of all places, with members of the ‘in’ clique intimidating new recruits to the extent that they give up after their first day.
