Thought this might be a good example for JC over Christmas. The 1914 Christmas truce, there are some wonderful accounts of it at this site http://www.christmastruce.co.uk for folks who might be interested.

I picked this one as an example of how friend and foe fraternised on Christmas Day was related in an interview by Company-Sergeant Major Frank Naden of the 6th Cheshire Territorials, who returned to his home in Stockport for a week’s leave:

“On Christmas Eve as each fireball went up from the German lines our men shouted ‘Hurrah’ and ‘Let’s have another’. They also sang Christians Awake and other Christmas hymns. On Christmas Dy one of the Germans came out of the trenches and held his hands up. Our fellows immedately got out of theirs, and we met in the middle, and for the rest of the day we fraternised, exchanging food, cigarettes and souvenirs. The Germans gave us some of their sausages, and we gave them some of our stuff. The Scotsmen started the bagpipes and we had a rare old jollification, which included football in which the Germans took part. The Germans expressed themselves as being tired of the war and wished it was over. They greatly admired our equipment and wanted to exchange jack knives and other articles. Next day we got an order that all communication and friendly intercourse with the enemey must cease but we did not fire at all that day, and the Germans did not fire at us.”

    Wonderful stuff huh?

A nice story, from the early stages of the Great War. They thought they’d be home by Xmas and it never happened again.

Both sides then proceeded to shell eachother to bits in a land of mud. Because they simply had no choice.

At the end of the second ‘great’ war most people had had enough and our great leader Churchill was kicked out.

    Merry crimbo one and all.

Expecting to hear the sound of ripping wrapping paper soon.

Hope you all experience love and comfort this Christmas, whatever your race, creed, religion or pet owning status.

Seriously though – have a good one and I am sure we will all spare a thought for those less fortunate than us.

    Love to you and yours.

At the end of the second ‘great’ war most people had had enough and our great leader Churchill was kicked out.

Churchill did get a second bite of the cherry, as he became prime minister again in the mid 1950’s, when he was over 80. He should have quit while he was ahead and left politics as a war hero on a ‘high’ in 1945, but instead he ended his political days as a failed peacetime Tory p.m.

this is very true btw, at a time of life when Winston could barely recognise himself in the shaving mirror.

And what does that say about us ?
