i spend quite a lot of time on the internet, mainly for company i will admit that, and because i ahve met a lot of really genuinly lovely people here and hope i dont have an axe to grind with anybody

i like the rest like a banter a bit of freindly rivalry of course i do and im not advocating a site where this doesnt happen

however, this afternoon after reading the new threads, sure i look at them even tho i dont choose to comment sometimes, i went to check my mails, there just before i was about to log in this story was headlined………..made me wonder really and i make no apologies for cut and pasting it below…….. it has some upsetting content

A 6ft 2in “selfish bully” has been jailed for life for the brutal murder of his partner’s 15-month-old daughter.

Gary Alcock, 28, attacked Violet Mullen when her crying interrupted his fun on an Xbox.

The horrific assault caused “catastrophic” internal injuries, including cracked ribs and brain damage.

The attack happened under the nose of the toddler’s 22-year-old mother Claire Flanagan.

But she turned a blind eye because she was desperate to keep her boyfriend Alcock, Manchester Crown Court was told.

Flanagan has been jailed for five years after being cleared of murder but found guilty of causing or allowing the death.

Alcock was told he must serve a minimum of 21 years behind bars.

The court heard how the toddler had suffered at least three separate assaults in the weeks before her death.

A post-mortem examination found evidence of more than 35 separate injuries on her face and body, including bruises, rib fractures and brain damage.

Alcock, who weighs more than 13 stone and has a conviction for an assault on a previous partner, attacked Violet while he was alone with the baby.

Senior investigating officer Vinnie Chadwick described the “horrendous act” as “unnecessary and cruel”.

“Gary Alcock was a selfish, bullying man who took away the life of an innocent child who he had the responsibility to care for,” he said.

Tessa Chapman, Sky’s north of England correspondent, said medical evidence suggested Alcock had stamped on Violet.

“Little Violet Mullen did not stand a chance when his anger got the better of him,” she said.

“A post-mortem found bruises all over her body. She had 35 separate injuries and she had damage to her brain, cracked ribs and internal injuries.

“There were also marks they think were pinch marks.”

She added: “They think that Gary Alcock had hit her and possibly stamped on her and probably shook her as well.”

Flanagan had denied witnessing any abuse, claiming she “trusted” her now ex-lover.

yeah I saw both the stories cath And Yvonne are speaking of.. in both cases the “boy” friend.. There is a new thing up here, it is being piloted here in Dundee for the Scottish..My daugter came home with all the leaflets they were automatically given if you child is at nursery..
basically…say hypothetically.. your daughter met a new Lad in life..well she an now check up and see if he has form for any kind of abuse. Ifs its the worried grandparent,, they canask for a check up, and while thy wont be told anything, it will at least be looked into. An no i am not being sexist, im sure the same applies to single parent young fathers.

I do not know how successful this has been so far.But there are to damm many cases of the so called ” stepfathers” doing this shyt..

We had a big case up here last year about a wee boy, brandon Muir who was slowly and sytematically killed by some junkie,, he did it with previous lasses and their babies. But Brandon was sngled out as he was a live wire, and they dont like THAT..kicked in the stomach till he was coughing up blood, then taken to a party and propped up against a toilet bowl,, while Dundee lowlifes partied on around him,, and laughed at his sunken eyes..
here’s hoping this new Law helps.. but alas….

Gosh Ruby, this may sound like cowardice but I prefer not to know about terrible cases like this. If I think too deeply about it I cannot sleep, I know it happens and like everyone else I contribute to the various childrens charities but I sort of think me knowing about it and losing sleep doesnt help anyone. Does not mean I do not care, does that make sense? Oh well its how I cope with it.

Alas being able to check up on someone proves nothing other than they have never been caught!

It amazes me how much strength is given to CRB checks and the like. People who are abusive (in whatever form) can be doing it for decades before they are even caught.

We only ever hear about the extreme cases or where catastophic failings in the system have resulted in a child’s death, but did you know it is so much more common than you think.

I used to own a nursery school and in one term alone we had at least 3 children whom we considered to be at risk and were monitoring. I actually had to take the step of referring one case to social services, doing so with such apprehension in case I was wrong – turned out that the child and family were already known to social services. I felt so much better on hearing that.

Child protection or safeguarding begins at home with you and me, never be affraid to take something further if you have a hunch, if you are wrong no harm done.

Abuse takes many forms, neglecting to take your ill child to a doctor cause you can’t take time of work is neglect which is abuse. Obviously sexual abuse is what it is but allowing a child to encounter sexualised viewing on tv for example a 13 year old watching an 18 certificate film, could be construde as abuse. Obviously extreme examples but like I said, good upbringing in a safe environment begins in the home.
I could talk about this all day as I have attended several courses on the subject over the years and seen some pretty harrowing stuff. Nothing shocks me. As long as people cannot even be civil to one and other in a chat room, what chance have the extremists in this society ever got of seeing right from wrong.

Anyway back to my original point, step fathers or not, CRB or not, Background checks or not, it will make no difference. it goes on. I know many men who adore and take on a child as if they were there own, why should they be scrutinised because of the actions of a minority in society?

no,, this is a new thing Melody.. IF he had committed an offence before they would have to tell the person that initially inquired. You are right in sayin they rarely get caught. But in the case study Of the wee boy i mentioned IF the mother would have asked these days she would have been told he has previous. its not a maliceous persons agenda.. ya just dont call up for this Info,, what with data protection etc.. Will see if i can find out more.

Thanks for this Melody… one thing struck me though, do social services not inform the nursery if a child who is at risk is in their care? Surely the nursery should know?
