A cancer patient was astonished when he was refused a hospital appointment because “he was dead”.
The NHS told Cancer sufferer Alan Campbell they believed he was dead
Alan Campbell was astonished when an NHS call centre operative told him to go to his GP to “get it sorted”.
The 63 year old tried to reason with the call centre by saying: “I’m talking to you, aren’t I?”
The NHS Choose and Book representative maintained that Alan Campbell would have to contact his GP at the Bangor Street Health and Resource Centre to resolve the matter.
The former trucker from Blackburn was anxious for an appointment as he feared his skin cancer had spread to his throat.
The NHS service aims to allow patients to choose which hospital they wish to attend to provide “greater convenience and certainty”.
Mr Campbell said: “I’m not one for complaining but when somebody says you’re dead it’s not on.”
After his surgery assured him the mix-up had been resolved, he again tried to book a consultant but was told for a second time that the system showed he was dead.
Alan Campbell said: “It’s stressful enough not knowing what’s causing the pain in my throat without all this.”
The NHS Trust which is responsible for the phone service has apologised.
