24 April, 2010 at 9:41 am #438345Gawd I remember the first mobile phones! They were like bricks…our doctor had one to call emergency services. We didn’t think they’d ever be for the ordinary mortal, who’d want to carry something like that around all the time?
It’s amazing to think that when the first mobile phone was available there were still countless homes – ours included – that didn’t even have a landline. Our street had 14 houses, and there was only one house with a landline, we kids thought she was dead posh! She allowed people to use her phone but truth be told we didn’t have anyone to ring! She was a lifesaver though when my brother started having febrile convulsions, I have lasting memories of running to “Aunty Maude’s” to ask her to call the doctor quickly while my panicked mother held my limp and lifeless brother in her arms. How different it would be now with landlines and mobiles taken so much for granted.

“The cellphone in the long range is going to be embedded under your skin behind your ear along with a very powerful computer who is in effect your slave”.
24 April, 2010 at 11:58 am #438347We have all become victims of technology we are all here aren’t we?
I was lappyless for 2 days the other week & then I realised how much I use it.
When was the last time any of you used a telephone directory to get a number – good ole google is quicker.
24 April, 2010 at 12:29 pm #438348Are we victims of technology though? I’m not so sure.
When my mother died I spent the best part of two weeks back home sorting everything out. None of my family had a pc and I felt like my right arm had been cut off! There were so many things that I didn’t know why they had to be done or how to do them, I’d have normally turned to Google…I ended up going to the local library instead…just like the old days! But everything took so much longer to do, and I probably ended up making 2 or 3 times more phone calls than I really needed to.
As for telephone directories, these days they usually go right into the recycling bin – saves them gathering dust!
Also, where else would I be able to chat to people from all over the country, indeed all over the world, and to hear so many different points of view? It’s a double-edged sword but on the whole I feel my life is enriched by technology rather than being a victim.
24 April, 2010 at 2:36 pm #438349It’s a gorgeous sunny day and yet my daughter would rather play inside on the wii than go outdoors and be active…. (she will be out soon though regardless)…. but my point it technology isn’t always a good thing

Like so many things in life, it isn’t technology that’s bad, it’s how we use it and/or let it control us. What you are saying now about your daughter and the wii is similar to what our parents used to say about us and the television.
