“Identity cards will provide an easy and secure way for legal UK residents to prove who they are.”

“Identity cards are the cornerstone of our national identity scheme, which calls for an easy to use and extremely secure system of personal identification for UK residents.

Each identity card will be unique, and will combine the cardholder’s biometric data with their checked and confirmed identity details – a ‘biographical footprint’. These identity details and the biometrics will be stored on the national identity register. Basic identity information will also be held in a chip on the identity card itself.

The cards will be linked to their owners by unique biometric information (for example, fingerprints). This is needed to ensure that your card is really yours, and to protect you from identity theft.”

I think you can apply now .. on a voluntary basis and available for whole population from 2012.
    Any Thoughts??

Could be a very interesting thread – unfortunately it will be hi-jacked by Gazlans diatribe

Good idea. These days you need ID for just about anything but it’s not fool proof. Bio metric data will be so hopefully will not only increase national security but will also stop a lot of fraud. My other half just has just has his bank account fleeced by a person impersonating him – with these ID cards it wouldn’t have been possible.

No doubt certain ppl on here will will up in the air seeing it as an infringement of their human rights etc etc but they will always shout louder than anyone about everything because that’s their irrational and selfish nature.

Where is the wierdo wacky scientist btw, he`s been quiet so far….probbly hiding his face in shame hoping the ” raghead ” buisness has blown over…

Not another chip…its hard enough carrying this one on my shoulder ….. just wait till they plant one in your head, yule think the card was a blessing…. :x

The card seem like a good idea in principle like most of these types of schemes.
The only concern I would have is if I lost or my card was stolen by people who deliberately wanted to get hold of others identity cards….that the thieves would have access to alot more of my personal data etc than say just a passport would give them. Then that would make identity fraud even more easier for them.

Would be far easier to chip everyone at birth, similar to the chip implant they have for animals.
Only problem would be kidnapping may go up in this country :-

    sorry couldn’t resist

Dont see the problem with ID cards except that if the government requires us to have them by law then at least the first one should be free
