I’ve always been curious how a set of basically bronze age values came to be a part of our modern technological world. People can believe what they want, im not trying to pi/ss on anyone’s beliefs. Im just curious why it is so.
In almost any other area of life people ask for proof to believe in something, yet a lot of people accept a God on total “faith” alone. There are some obvious reasons. Some people could just be brainwashed the same way people will be brainwashed by charismatic cult leaders and cults. Some people will just go to Church, and get spoon fed the “evidence” from one side, and lead their lives never knowing the “evidence” they are getting is flimsy or non existent. They’ve got bills to pay and a hectic life, and they want an easy quick answer. Some people might think it’s mum and dads religion, and it was good enough for them, so it’s good enough for me, and whilst the religion might have some bad points it’s really got a good heart. It also gives them a sense of belonging. Some people might hit really bad points in their lives, and need hope. Some people might need to think they need a reason for their existence, and they dont wanna think they are a random fluke. They also need a set of morals and laws to follow. Some people might lose loved ones, and be comforted by the thought that they are in a “better place” and they will be reunited. Some people will wanna feel that justice will eventually be dished out to the wicked and evil. Some people will look at a tree or blue sky, and think it’s evidence of God, or some people will look at the complicated universe, and wonder how something can come from nothing, and give the “god in the gaps” argument the same way the argument was used when people didnt understand lighting or natural disasters or anything else. Some people might reach PB’s age and realise the Grim Reaper is heading from them, and they dont wanna think they are gonna rot away in a coffin.
The list is exhaustive, and it could go on all night. I think one or more of these reasons would apply to a lot of believers though.
I dont know enough about other religions, but I believe Christianty exists as a force in our present world through sheer luck. It won the religion lottery ticket. In any contest someone has to win. We need religion, and Christianty emerged victorious against all the other similar religions at that time. It would probably have been a footnote of history and we would have believed something else today if Constantine hadnt seen a vision of a cross before a battle, saw it an omen, and when the battle was won decided to turn his empire (a huge chuck of the known world at that time) to Christianity, pretty much whether his subjects liked it or not. At that time Christianity would have had the power to do anything it liked. I think that’s the luck aspect. After that it’s just a case of passing it from generation to generation.
People of the past would also have seen it as their duty to believe what their parents and grandparents believed, and they probably just didnt have any information to contradict their beliefs. They would also probably have been far more prone to believing in superstition.
You have to wonder in our modern world with so much information freely avaliable, and people less prone to believe stuff on faith alone how long Christianity and the other religions will endure. In 500 years time will they still be around or will they be treated the same way Scientology etc is today?17 December, 2009 at 9:04 am #426116It can be a comfort when you lose YAWEH……… 8)

my opinion is relgion shud never have been invented. it creates crime and wars amongst the idiots that want to enforce their beliefs on everybody weather they like it or not.
Religion does not cause wars, mankind causes wars and uses religion as an excuse, these are not religious people.
17 December, 2009 at 6:01 pm #426121i think alot of ppl bring thier kids up to believe as the world would be a pretty scarey place
for a child if all there was after death was to rot underground.
even as an adult , its better to believe in something , that there is something , that one day u,ll be reunited with loved ones, than u just die and thats it.17 December, 2009 at 10:32 pm #426122I dont agree that as a adult it’s better to believe in something on faith alone without evidence than to believe in nothing. You start believing in one thing purely on faith then you’ll start believing other thing on faith alone.
I saw a programme that said 43 percent or something of American’s believe that the Earth is only 6000 years old. That to me is just silliness. Absolute refusal to believe any hard evidence that’s put in front of you.
Children believe in Santa till a certain age before they’re told he’s not real. That’s harmless though. Children being brought up with images of burning in hell implanted in their brain isnt harmless though. It is brainwashing people at an early age. I saw an argument on the net with a Christian woman and an atheist. When the argument started going against the woman she started coming out with “you’ll burn in hell for not believing and it’s HOT. Im sure she believed it. It can lead to brainwashed intolerant adults.17 December, 2009 at 11:41 pm #426123There’s a difference in believing in a God or higher being and following an organised religion.
Organised religions are man-made, usually to set a moral code, often depicting a judgemental god and images of places such as purgatory and hell being used to keep people in line – in essence, fear-based. Many people follow an organised religion not because they have a deep faith in God but because their parents did, or because of a need to belong somewhere, or wanting to hedge their bets – “I don’t know for sure if there is a God but I’ll go to church and be good just in case there is”. They don’t give it a second thought when away from the church…”Sunday Christians”. IMHO it is this that leads to the brainwashed intolerant adults that you refer to.
Most of the people I know who have a strong faith in God do not follow an organised religion and only go to church if they have to for weddings, christenings and funerals. They have no desire to go to a man-made building, to follow man-made rituals, to conform to man-made rules, yet their faith is deeper than those that I know that attend church regularly.
As for evidence, what is evidence to a believer can appear to be blind faith to a non-believer. Who is to say which of them is right and which is wrong?
17 December, 2009 at 11:58 pm #426124Aren’t they planning on having lessons in schools, for those who don’t believe in God?
That should be fun..
Morning Class, there is no God, see you next week!
