Is anyone following the first few weeks of the Iraq Inquiry.

It seems the Chilot Inquiry will have as much teeth as my grandmother. From the very beginning of planning for military action a whole raft of lies and half truths were givien to Parliment and the British public. What really annoys me though is after reasing the transcripts of the first few giving evidence at the inquiry, it seems crystal clear that the war was illegal according to international law specifically relating to an invaders aggression. I read today that Blair will interview tomorrow and claim he knew the WMD did not exist and that regime change was the foremost reason for the invasion. As this would contravine international law can anyone shed light as to when charges will be brought against Blair????

See i dont really care, Saddam needed a good kicking (and a good hanging as it happens) what i’d like to see is countries intervening when theres genocide going on in a country where theres no oil, or strategic advantage ,and to go in, do the job, then say “there you go it’s up to you now” and withdraw

Well, the United Nations is supposed to be there for that type of thing Pete. The US stuck two fingers up to the UN though with the invasion of Iraq. Sure, Saddam was an evil tyrant. So what? Britain and the US have been in bed with bigger tyrant’s than Saddam, and in fact were in bed with Saddam in the early days.
The invasion of Iraq was an illegal invasion, and totally illegal by international law.

America was also in bed with Bin Laden in fact they supplied and trained him the idea i think was anti Iran but he turned when Kuwait decided they wouldn’t take his help against Iran but the Americans.
I care not a jot whether it was illegal or not Saddam Hussain needed to go one way or another all i want is consistancy

I think Bin Laden was trained by the CIA when Russia invaded Afghanistan. I dont think we should run around like international cowboys invading any soverign country or leader that pi.sses us off without international or UN backing though.
There are dozens of people like Saddam running countries, but of course we wont be invading them.

    Exactly my point consistancy

Bin Laden and his extended family were regular guests to the Bush household prior to the events. We can all shout about the conspiracy theories, watch and read the evidence to support or deny. Fact is, it’s done, we can’t change it. And yes, I agree with Pete . . illegal or not . . where’s the consistancy :?

I’ve often wondered, as I watch the agonised breast beatings of the ‘concerned’ liberal classes, what might have happened if the Iraq invasion (acting under the authority of the UN apparently) did NOT take place.

Kindly old Saddam would still be in power; the Sunni extremists would still be suppressed or murdered; Saddam’s family would still be stealing money from the country and salting it away in overseas banks; the Kurds and the marsh Arabs would still be killed off in their thousands – if any would still be left that is; The Ba’ath Party would continue to reign supreme and all other forms of religious or political organisation would still be ruthlessly suppressed; and so on and so forth.

I am irresistably drawn to the conclusion that the regime of murder, torture, rape, political suppression of all minorities was no different from that which currently exists in a number of African, South American and Far Eastern countries.

With that in mind, I cannot help thinking that the constant clamour for ‘public enquiries’ and suchlike and the current Chilcott enquiry, are simply an exercise in self flagellation.
After all, if (as we all suspect it will) Chilcott concludes that the invasion of Iraq was ‘illegal’ etc …… so what??? It’s done now and we all have to bear the consequences.

I hear the sound of stable doors being slammed shut and bolted several years after the horse shat itself inside.

I notice that the Media are studiously avoiding criticising the UN – under whose auspices so many nations contributed to the invasion and conquest of Iraq. It wasn’t just the US and ourselves that did it.

Without doubt, in the minds of all muslims i know. One thing is mentioned and has been for many many years, the plight of the Gazans…. This is, i think one of the most emotional topics with any muslim the world over. What was a war to subdue chemical and nuclear threat has now evolved into a war on global terror….There will be no end to this war as everyday, muslims consider the plight and fate of their brothers and sisters in the Gaza. Whatever the morals of sadam hussain or this enquiry, it will be of no interest to the families of over 100,000 civilians lost in Iraq….Focus should be given to the forces of israel who have, all but destroyed the `Holy land `while the UN stood by….the silence from the western world was deafening, look beyond the superficial and then bring to justice the murderous forces let loose to cause nothing but fear and destruction through-out the middle east, namely, Palestine, only when some truthful sincere action is taken against these forces will anything resembling peace be allowed to flourish. The increase in greivence against the western world will only increase further as the Faith itself increases the world over. what started in Iraq, is now on our doorstep, regardless of tony blair, bush, sadam, all of them. You cannot be selective with Justice, it must be served and be seen to have been served.

If that is your tongue Gaz..you have some serious medical issues!

The reason for the inquiry is to ascertain whether it was an illegal war, and.. yup it was.

Whether it was a justifiable illegal war or not is kind of the point the rest of us want to make, but there are rules to prevent hitler-like takeovers of other countries. At least I assume that the rules were made after WW2.

There is no doubt at all in my mind that Saddam Hussein and his regime were thugs. And there is also no doubt in my mind that when it suited the US to have strong personal links with him (because of Iran etc), then they ignored his track record on human rights.

Its hypocrisy pure and simple. This country should never have gone along with it.

And PB, accepting that the UN did go into Iraq with us, at what point did they consider they were kind of railroaded into it. It was the UN peacekeeping force that ended up there, but it was the US and the UK who actually moved on Iraq in the early stages.

You talk about other countries in Africa, the middle east and South America who actively suppress minority groups, and nothing is being done about them. So we are led back to……………oil.

It was all about oil. And that makes me sick. The world is running short of fossil fuels, and yet wars are being waged with thousands being killed instead of putting all that money (and we all know how costly war is) into finding alternative clean energy sources.

It was about finding a politically expedient way to remove someone who had become a liability from power, and keeping access to middle eastern oil supplies. But… the irony of that is that as a direct result both the UK and the US have had the worst recessions in nearly 100 years.
