This thread will probably be ruined and flooded with random abuse because somebody outside the clique has posted it and they don’t like “new people” starting topics.. but to heck with it. I’m going to start one anyway. I know what you’re all thinking – rebel.

Anyway I’ve recently acquired a home brewing kit and took up this rather exciting hobby of home brewing. It’s really fun, the experimenting, trying different flavours, trying different types of malt and hops, trying different measurements. Using 2lb of brewing sugar and half a lb of spraymalt, or 2lbs of spraymalt and half lb of brewing sugar see which one comes out the best, which produces the best head or the best taste.

I’m currently brewing some traditional room temperature Yorkshire ale. The hydrometer is currently at 1.000, I’ve just added a lb of medium spraymalt and decided to let it ferment for another week in a warm cupboard, before letting it mature in a barrel for 6 weeks in my coal shed, where it’s nice and cool. Takes a lot of patience. I’m currently deciding, when syphoning it into the barrel, whether to use brewing sugar/glucose, or more spraymalt for it to mature in. Baring in mind I already have 2lbs of malted barley in there with the hops and wheat. I may use the brewing sugar, give it a clean crisp taste and hope it doesn’t interfere with the development of the body & head.

Anyone else here do home brewing? Any tips for a beginner?

Aye, just had a little taste of mine, and it tastes quite alright already. Very malty and very strong. Imagine it in 7 weeks time after another week fermentation and 6 weeks maturing!

I think I’ve used a bit too much malt though, it tastes VERY malty, I’m going to mature it in brewing sugar for definite now. But it’s tasting alright already! It’s gonna be about 7-8% right now, as I’ve used twice as many ingredients as in the instructions, and the instructions make a 4% abv beer.
