The price of food overall rose by 18% in the last year apparently and with the economic crisis wages and benefits have not risen to reflect this.
    some rises include…
    Rice – up 81%
    Pork sausages – up 51%
    Mince – up 22%
    Milk – up 14%

How are you feeling the pinch? Have you noticed a difference when you go shopping? Have you made cut backs and had to compromise on quality and quantity?

The worry by many action groups is that child poverty will grow as a result as children will be given fewer and fewer healthy foods like fruit and veg which have become more expensive.

What’s your thoughts? There is talk about raising child benefit and tax credits to counter act this but how can a government already in crisis find the money to raise these… more tax…

I personally seem to spend on average about £30 a week more than I did in recent months.

Or less food cause it’s more expensive and therefore maybe less obesity ?

Its quality not quantity pete (so am told)

It’s quantity that causes obesity though. The main problem is going to be those who maybe struggle already and have to look for lower prices, which probably means less healthy options and conversely i guess more intensively produced foodstuffs

Food is definitely more expensive, and things aren’t going up by a penny or two, but 10p and 20p jumps at a time. However…..

supermarkets seem to be doing more and more special offers – last week I was going to make a chicken curry but found that I could buy a ready-mady “healthy eating” meal for two of 1 chicken korma, 1 lamb jalfrezi, 1 pilau rice and 2 naan for £1.20 less than I could buy just the chicken for! I don’t usually buy ready meals, but that day I did.

This week the supermarket is doing a special, 1/3 off fresh chicken, much more up my street and I’m stocking up the freezer. There are some good deals on the fresh vegetables too.

So yes, prices have gone up, but there’s some good deals on too and the canny shopper will take advantage of those deals and stock up.

I absolutely agree that prices have shifted upwards – but not across the board.

There is a ‘lag’ effect between for example a crop failure and the resultant price increase – sometimes by several months.

Yes rice has gone up and so has pasta & flour – driven by drought / natural ‘disasters etc. They’ll come back down in the long term.

If you shop wisely you can keep food bills under control. I buy brisket of beef now and slow cook it whereas I would have bought rib of beef and roasted it. I now regularly do lots of casseroles, hotpots and ‘stews’ as well as currying chicken. Neck of lamb is both cheap and tasty and great in curries or ‘stews’.

Also, I’ve switched to buying a lot of supermarket own brand products, which I would have turned my nose up at before. I’ve found them to be just as good as the branded item – as long as you select wisely.

In fact Pete, you’re quite right. I really used to believe that ‘own brand’ products were somehow inferior and wouldn’t be seen dead buying them. i’ve changed my views.

I bought a slow cooker which I now swear buy, convenient, easy, economic and you are right pb, if you braise the meat it doesn’t have to be a quality cut.

Unfortunately, I just watched a news item regarding this since I made the original post and their fear is that the less wise amongst us will favour processed high salt foods in favour of the wholesome more expensive ones. Save the children are calling on the government to take crisis action… has it come to that yet?

ahem i swear BY it not buy it. (doofus me)
