I met a friend & went shopping yesterday. I can almost hear some of you saying and…
Well, we were in that little market town in Wiltshire that has on many occasions turned out in all weather to pay their respects in the repatriation of service personnel on “Peace keeping” duty. Serving & ex serving personnel & ordinary people going about their everyday life lined the high street.
It was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced. The whole town stopped & the silence was deafening if that makes sense.
140 something lives lost & why exactly??
Are we actually doing any good out there? Or should Gordon Brown just pull our service personnel out & let the countries concerned get on with it?
I am inclined to say let them sort their own troubles but, that might be idealistic.
What are your views on the subject ??
4 February, 2009 at 9:03 pm #390989What conflict are you referring to? Iraq or Afghanistan? I believe a pull-out date has already been set for Iraq although I would imagine most of those troops will be getting redeployed to Afghanistan after a brief reunion with their families at home.

I wasn’t refering to specific conflicts but those lost are involved in both areas.

5 February, 2009 at 7:02 pm #390992You could look at it that if they’re peacekeepers theyre doin a bloody bad job :?

My point exactly – achieving what ???? The troubles in the areas concerned has been going on for yonks.
Fair enough being lost fighting for British wars but these countries have been scrapping amongst themselves for years. Let them get on with it – we can’t put everything right.
Idealistic maybe but wasn’t that was my original question …….
What exactly are British troops achieving out there?
5 February, 2009 at 7:19 pm #390994I imagine the official government line is that we are in Afghanistan to prevent the Taliban once again taking over the country and making it a terrorist safe haven and training ground. Whether this is being achieved or not – who knows?

I’d rather them be in a safe haven in Afghanistan than hiding in our inner cities.
