I’ve never been a fan of Big Issue magazine but I can see the original point behind it.
But now a lot of the sellers seem to be foreign. When was the last investigative documentary or article, I wonder?

Iv’e noticed that too, not only foreign but often extremely rude too
18 December, 2008 at 1:16 pm #387935I hadn’t really noticed Big Issue sellers becoming largely foreign and have certainly never come across any rude sellers.
I always like to buy a copy of the Big Issue when it is offered – I admire the fact that the people selling it are actually trying to work their way out of their situation rather than sit on a street corner and beg.
I think that in itself deserves our support.
19 December, 2008 at 9:44 am #387936I agree UK – it may be the part of the country we are in as I’m in a rural area – I don’t see many foreign sellers………………………but like you I always stop, pay for it but tell them to keep it to sell to someone else as I would only put it in the bin    ( I so hate waste !! :? :? )

20 December, 2008 at 9:55 am #387939Where i work outside we always have someone selling the big issue , one is a lady and the other a man , they take it in turns , both are foreign , the lady one day told us her story in very broken english , she came to this country with her 3 children , fleeing her violent husband , within 2 mnths of being here she was pregnant with baby number 4 , yes she stands there in all weathers but not for long , she has her car parked around the corner , a nicer and more expensive car than i have and it is hers , we have asked ,she sells the big issue for 15 mins then goes and sits in her car for 10 and so on and so on , so having come here with nothing and having to sell the big issue to feed her ever expanding family she manages to buy a car , a nice car ????
The fella is an asian man, he cannot speak english very well apart from to say big issue please , and thank you , then last week we came into work to find this man dressed as santa while selling his big issue , and trying to sing christmas carols, he now stand and says , ho ho ho jingle jingle jingle , merry xmas big issue please lol
as someone else said im not sure if its because of the town or city that you live in but in leeds i would say at least 70 % are foreign , but i have yet to find any one nasty or rude , some con men and women yes , but not found anyone rude

Me niether, not noticed a lot of foreign Big Issue sellers, then again, i suppose it depends on the town in which you live in. Niether have i found any of them rude. Actually, if anything, and more often than not! they’re quite polite..
If i can, i give the pound, and tell them to keep the Magazine to sell to someone else.. Reason being, they’re standing there in the cold all day, they could get themselves a hot drink or Pasty.
20 December, 2008 at 7:17 pm #387941all foreign and all con artists
(Bah Humbug !!!)21 December, 2008 at 3:47 pm #387942Further to my original point, the foreigners I’m referring to appear to be muslims, probably from the Indian sub-continent.
I’m not coming at this from a discriminatory angle. I could understand Zimbabwean refugees or impoverished Romanians selling Big Issue, but I thought islamic charities were good at helping muslims who’d fallen on hard times so I’m just surprised to see muslims selling Big Issue. -
